Emma Navarro and Loïs Boisson engaged in a closely contested battle in the first round of the 2026 US Open, with their rain-hit match taking a dramatic turn as it stretched across two days. The two players displayed very different emotions just a few feet away from each other after the thrilling showdown finally concluded.
Emma Navarro and Loïs Boisson Display Contrasting Emotions After US Open Clash
Navarro appeared on course for a straight-set victory over Boisson when rain interrupted their match on Sunday, August 30. While leading 7-6(6), 4-2 in the encounter, the American saw her momentum halted when inclement weather forced play to be suspended overnight on the outer courts, delaying her moment of victory.
Although Navarro was just a few points away from victory, Boisson raised her level to make a comeback in the second set once play resumed on Monday, forcing a decider. Despite the setback, the American held her nerve to claim a 7-6(6), 6-7(1), 6-3 victory to book her place in the second round of the US Open.
The contrasting emotions from the two players stole the spotlight after their tough encounter. While Navarro celebrated her victory, Boisson vented her frustration by smashing her racket in a striking scene.

During her on-court interview, Navarro took pride in her resilience and mental toughness after having to play the decider despite coming so close to sealing a two-set victory.
“Yeah, it feels good. Went home last night. It was raining and I knew I had six points to win, and everyone’s telling me, ‘Get it done, finish it. You only got to win six points.’ Came out and lost a few more than I would have liked, but just proud of my toughness, I guess,” Navarro said.
“You know, it’s not easy being that close and then losing a tough set, but was able to hold it together and had a lot of fun playing out here today. Thank you guys for sticking in there with me,” she added.
The 25-year-old also highlighted the difficult challenge posed by an overnight match suspension but revealed that she had prepared herself for every turn the match could take.
“I felt like I was playing the match all night. Never fully shut it off. It’s tough. We left the courts at 9:30 last night. We were back at 9:30 this morning,” she said. “So, not an easy scenario, but I went through all the possible scenarios of what could happen today, whether I win six points in a row or have to play a tough third set. So, I was ready for anything.”
Up next, Emma Navarro will lock horns with Caty McNally in an all-American showdown in the second round of the US Open. Their head-to-head record stands at 2-2, with McNally claiming a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory in their most recent encounter at the 2026 Libéma Open, while Navarro triumphed 6-2, 6-1 in their US Open meeting last year.
If Navarro emerges victorious against McNally, she will face either Katie Boulter or Karolína Muchová in the third round in New York.
