The San Francisco 49ers have been pulled into an unusual news cycle involving owner Jed York and an alleged fraud scheme involving Daejon Love. The two stories have little connection on the face of things, yet the timing of it all has raised a few red flags.
One former quarterback has now added another twist, suggesting that the Daejon Love story may have helped push the ownership controversy out of the conversation.
Kurt Benkert’s Daejon Love Comment Fuels Debate Over 49ers News Cycle
Former NFL quarterback Kurt Benkert took to X to weigh in on the sudden surge of coverage surrounding Love.
Benkert wrote, “Daejon Love is the quickest industry plant of all time to brush over the Niners’ ownership issues from last week.”
Love was arrested by federal authorities on August 24 after allegedly posing as an undrafted San Francisco wide receiver. Investigators have accused him of using that identity in a romance and investment scheme that allegedly defrauded at least 26 women of $1.3 million across four states.
The allegations were especially unusual because Love reportedly built an elaborate fake NFL identity. He allegedly created online profiles claiming he was a 49ers player, used fabricated financial information, and pointed potential victims toward inaccurate Google and AI search results as supposed proof of his career.

This story emerged shortly after 49ers principal owner York was arrested in Ohio during a prostitution sting. York pleaded no contest to misdemeanor disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools, receiving a day in jail sentence with credit for time served and a $1,150 fine.
The NFL is also reviewing York’s conduct under its personal conduct policy. That means the ownership controversy has not necessarily ended with the resolution of his criminal case.
Benkert’s “industry plant” comment soon drew reactions from several NFL fans on X, although his post did not provide evidence that Love’s story was deliberately created to distract from York’s situation.
