Keenan Allen had been an Indianapolis Colt for less than two weeks when his first preseason appearance was followed by a much more serious development.
Allen was arrested around 1 a.m. Sunday in downtown Indianapolis. The police said officers found his vehicle in a no-parking zone and noticed signs of intoxication. The 34-year-old faces two preliminary misdemeanor counts: operating a vehicle while intoxicated with an alcohol concentration of .08 or more and operating while intoxicated while endangering a person.

Allen has not been formally charged at this point, according to an initial report. However, the reaction was immediate.
One NFL creator focused on the alternative Allen had available: “These athletes can afford drivers, Uber, etc, and just don’t use the services,” she wrote in her post.

Fantasy football analyst Peter Overzet went with dark humor, writing, “impressive DUI per route ridden,” in his post, while Alex Insdorf, who covers the Los Angeles Chargers, simply reacted, “Damn :(” in another post.

Sports creator Brandon Perna pointed to how quickly the situation developed after Allen’s move to Indianapolis.

Fantasy analyst Michael Hauff also viewed the news through Indianapolis’ receiving hierarchy, posting “Keenan Allen 📉” and “Josh Downs 📈” in his fantasy reaction.
Colts analyst Destin Adams offered another succinct response: “Well, this isn’t great 🙃.”

Not everyone was ready to jump from the arrest to a roster decision. ESPN Colts reporter Stephen Holder cautioned in his response that it would be “EXTREMELY presumptuous” to assume Indianapolis will release Allen.
Colts Still Gathering Information on Allen
The timing made the arrest especially jarring. Indianapolis officially signed Allen on Aug. 19 to a one-year deal reportedly worth up to $3.32 million, reuniting the six-time Pro Bowler with head coach Shane Steichen.

Allen then made his Colts preseason debut Saturday against the Detroit Lions. He caught his only target for 24 yards during the 25-16 loss before the starters exited.
Hours later, police took him into custody. The Colts acknowledged the incident Sunday but stopped short of announcing any discipline or roster decision.
“We are aware of the incident involving Keenan Allen last night,” the team said in a statement. “We are in the process of gathering more information and have no further comment at this time.”
Allen is entering his 14th NFL season after catching 81 passes for 777 yards and four touchdowns with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2025. Indianapolis signed him to add experience to its receiving corps, but the focus on Sunday shifted away from football.
The two counts remain preliminary, and the legal process is unresolved. The public reaction, however, arrived almost immediately, centered largely on the belief that a veteran professional athlete had safer options than getting behind the wheel.
