Bill Belichick’s second season as the head coach of a college football program has gotten off to a winning start. After Belichick endured a disappointing first season at North Carolina, many expected the Tar Heels to face another difficult beginning, including Deshaun Watson’s quarterback coach, Quincy Avery.
However, Belichick proved that betting against his coaching ability can come with consequences, and Avery quickly found himself on the wrong side of that gamble.

Belichick’s North Carolina squad defeated TCU 15-10 on Saturday, giving the veteran coach a 1-0 record to begin his second year in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels’ ability to limit the Horned Frogs to just 10 points proved to be one of the biggest factors behind the victory. However, Avery, like many others, did not anticipate North Carolina putting together such a strong defensive performance.
Before the game, Deshaun Watson’s QB coach had publicly expressed his confidence in TCU by revealing on X that he was willing to wager a significant amount of money while taking a shot at Belichick’s coaching ability.
Once Belichick’s team pulled off the unexpected victory and stunned college football fans, Avery had little choice but to acknowledge that his prediction had backfired.

The win over TCU offered UNC fans a reason to believe that this season could look considerably different from the last one.
More importantly, Belichick opened his second year by providing an early glimpse of the program he is attempting to build. For perhaps the first time during his tenure in Chapel Hill, his North Carolina team looked organized, competitive, and, most importantly, alive.
Belichick has been working to transform North Carolina into a legitimate winning program since accepting the head coaching position. However, one of the greatest coaches in NFL history endured a miserable first season in college football.

Belichick’s North Carolina tenure began with a 48-14 defeat against TCU. Things never truly improved from there, as the Tar Heels struggled throughout his first season and ultimately finished it with a disappointing 4-8 record.
The former NFL coach failed to attract significant interest from NFL teams after his departure from the New England Patriots. Instead, Belichick chose a completely different challenge by taking over North Carolina and entering college football as a head coach.
Now, after just one game of his second season, the early signs suggest that decision may not have been a mistake.
North Carolina’s victory over TCU has already provided Belichick with a much-needed boost and offered his critics a reason to reconsider their expectations.
