The college football world was thrilled to have one of the most respected NFL head coaches of all time, Bill Belichick, make the decision to take on a new challenge with the University of North Carolina.
Belichick joined the team as their new head coach in 2024, replacing Mack Brown after six years of his service to the program.
While the fans couldn’t contain their excitement on seeing Belichick come out of retirement, the journey since then hasn’t really been a cakewalk.
Why Bill Belichick Is on the Hot Seat Heading into His Second Year as UNC HC
Belichick’s tenure with the Tar Heels has been a challenging one in both on-field and off-field aspects.
In terms of football, UNC’s disappointing 4-8 run in Belichick’s first year as their head coach helped raise many eyebrows on whether the 8-time Super Bowl champion is cut out to coach in college football.

The team has also been facing a few administrative/staffing issues as the UNC general manager, Michael Lombardi, was sent on a paid leave indefinitely over a month ago.
On top of that, Bill announced that his son, Steve, who is also the Tar Heels’ defensive coordinator, was sent on a medical leave until further notice.
As a result, both Lombardi and Steve won’t be present in Dublin, Ireland, to help UNC clinch their season opener matchup against TCU on Saturday.
Talking about the staff issues, Colin Cowherd shared his thoughts on Aug. 2:
“It’s funny with Bill. Every coach, every broadcaster,, everybody’s got a hole, and I think Bill’s hole is he has such confidence in his intelligence that he tends to think, ‘I just want to hire somebody I know.’ I don’t want to teach them how to do a thing. If they know how I do business, my kids, Lombardi, I’m good with it. And I think Bill has so much confidence with his football knowledge, scouting,”
“It kind of feels like he’s just not pursuing the best of the best.”
Other than that, Bill’s relationship with his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, also became one of the biggest stories in the football world, with the clips of her seemingly controlling the UNC head coach’s interviews, which led to people worrying about her involvement in his professional life.

Another story that became a headline was when Hudson was rumored to be banned from UNC’s football facility; however, the program released a statement on the situation and clarified that it’s not true.
Many analysts and fans worry that the off-field drama around the UNC head coach has become too much of a distraction for him to really focus on the team, hence making the hot seat conversation around him even more serious.
