Caitlin Clark has been under the scanner right from her freshman year in Iowa. That applies to issues on and off the court. Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham spoke out against transgender athletes, and the team has been facing a political firestorm since. As a result of her popularity and her position in the league, Clark was also asked about her take.
Her position, or the lack thereof, has been criticized by popular commentator Riley Gaines. However, the fans are not in agreement with Gaines and her analysis of Clark.
Fans Call Out Riley Gaines After Her Caitlin Clark Criticism On Trans-Athlete Debate
Caitlin Clark does not think it’s her place to speak out on the presence of trans athletes in women’s sports. “It’s not really a discussion we have in our locker room,” Clark said. “It’s for leagues and governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions, but my focus is on basketball.” And this exact take has pushed many Republican commentators against her, including Riley Gaines.
“I think my main problem with Caitlin Clark and all of this isn’t that she isn’t necessarily taking a hardline stance,” Gaines said on the ‘Charlie Kirk Show.’ “I’m not going to say what I know personally and how she thinks on this issue, but it’s safe to assume how she feels about this issue. When asked about it, she doesn’t repeat the talking points that we’re told the league purports and what is then representative of the general public.”
It seems Clark and Cunningham are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to speaking their mind. Cunningham does not shy away from putting her opinions on the public forum. That nature has led to Sophie Cunningham being branded as the ‘protector’ of Clark over her time in Indiana. According to Gaines, Cunningham has had Clark’s back and now it’s the point guard’s turn to return the favour.
“It’s safe to say how she feels, but I more so take issue with how loyal Sophie Cunningham has been to Caitlin and her defense over the past few years. Not just on this topic, of course, but in her defense of totally biased refs and unfair treatment,” Gaines further said. “Sophie Cunningham is there to defend Caitlin Clark. Well, here, Sophie Cunningham has found herself in the midst of this cultural storm, and Caitlin Clark isn’t there defending her friend.”
However, fans don’t agree with Gaines regarding Clark’s stance on the issues. They would rather see Clark continue being away from politics and focusing on basketball.

The comment further emphasized that Caitlin Clark does not have to become a political spectacle to maintain her popularity. “But the most important thing is that Clark doesn’t have to take positions in order to be relevant. Riley, you supported men competing against women because you competed. After you lost, you changed your opinion. Why? For your own benefit?” the fan concluded.

The approach has resulted in a career-best season for Clark. She is averaging 22.1 points and 8.1 assists per game, which ranks among the best in the league. The Fever point guard is a prominent name in the MVP conversations and will continue to try to further her case. For now, Caitlin Clark’s priority is the WNBA title and not the off court conversations around the league.
