Christian McCaffrey remains one of the most productive fantasy assets in football whenever he takes the field. The problem is that taking the field has become the entire question with him. He turns 30 this season and has already dealt with a training camp issue. Fantasy managers have to decide whether the ceiling is worth the anxiety in 2026.
Should I Draft Christian McCaffrey in Fantasy Football?
Let me frame this the way I have been thinking about it. If a time traveler came back from January 2027 with no information other than “McCaffrey played 17 games” this season, he would be the No. 1 overall pick. Or at minimum, the No. 3 pick, no questions asked. That is how good he is when available.
The only reason he is not a surefire top-three selection is fear of injury. And that fear is entirely fair. After playing all 16 games in each of his first three seasons, McCaffrey has played seven games or fewer in three of his last six.

Whenever he is on the field, though, he is elite. McCaffrey averaged 21.0, 24.5, and 24.5 fantasy points per game in his three healthy seasons. Even last year, when he showed a visible decline in his rushing ability, he simply made up for it through the air. He hauled in a whopping 102 receptions and led all running backs with a 24.5% target share, a number that rivals some WR1s. His 1.96 yards per route run ranked second at the position.
That receiving role should hold up again. The San Francisco 49ers enter this season with a pass-catching group full of question marks, as George Kittle works back from an Achilles tear, Christian Kirk deals with a calf issue, and Ricky Pearsall’s knee clouds his availability. Mike Evans is 33 years old and coming off two straight seasons of hamstring issues. Somebody has to catch the football in that offense. McCaffrey is the safest bet in the building.
Here is the number that gives me pause. McCaffrey handled 413 touches last season. That is a staggering workload for any player, let alone a running back about to turn 30 with this medical history. Volume like that tends to collect a debt eventually, and he has already missed time in training camp with what was described as tightness.
Last year, I was screaming from the rooftops about not drafting scared. Take McCaffrey. We cannot predict injury. That was my stance and I stand by having said it. This year, I am not predicting injury for any player in the NFL, with exactly one exception. I just cannot do it with McCaffrey.

There is a point where I would change my tune. If I am picking in the back half of the first round and he falls to pick 9, 10, or 11, I will hold my nose and jump in. Value eventually overwhelms discomfort.
His ADP is RB3 and I have him at RB4, which understates how I actually approach him in a draft room. There are unquestionably three running backs and four wide receivers I am taking before I even consider McCaffrey. Even then, I am not going to feel great about it. Even so, there is typically someone in every draft who likes McCaffrey more than I do.
