The Houston Texans and quarterback C.J. Stroud have remained engaged in contract extension discussions throughout the offseason. The situation has been a major talking point for both Stroud and the Texans since the end of last season.
While a deal has yet to be reached, a rumor about Stroud’s alleged contract demands created plenty of debate around the NFL before another report offered a different perspective.
Conflicting Reports Emerge on C.J. Stroud’s Contract Demands
ESPN 97.5 Houston radio host Jeremy Branham recently reported that Stroud is believed to be seeking $70 million annually on his next contract, while the Texans have reportedly offered a deal in the million to $50M-$55M range.
The report quickly made its way around the league, particularly because Stroud’s extension negotiations have already become one of the major offseason storylines surrounding Houston.
However, KPRC 2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson later pushed back on the reported $70 million figure, citing information from league sources and providing a much different picture of the ongoing negotiations.
“There is no astronomical $70 million average per year asking price from Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, per league sources, in his contract discussions with the team,” Wilson wrote.
“No deal is imminent at this time, per sources. Remains a possibility before season, but definitely not at that range and not close at this time. Barring new developments, this could stretch into next year. Both sides have time on their side.”

Wilson also provided further context regarding why Houston may not feel pressured to finalize a deal immediately.
“Stroud is secured through the 2027 season on a fifth-year club option. Plus, the quarterback market is expected to rise significantly next year. A deal now could pale in comparison to potential value next year, especially if he has the kind of season the team is hoping for. Should that happen, price obviously goes up. That’s a good problem to have, not a deal-breaker at all.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter also reported that the Texans and Stroud’s representatives have entered preliminary discussions regarding a potential extension. However, Schefter similarly indicated that the two sides are not particularly close to reaching an agreement at this stage.

Stroud became eligible for an extension for the first time after arriving in Houston as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Texans also exercised his fifth-year option in April, keeping him under contract through the 2027 season.
Getting the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year under contract before Week 1 of the next season could potentially save Houston money in the long run, particularly with quarterback salaries continuing to rise. Still, the Texans do not appear to be facing immediate pressure to complete an agreement because they have Stroud under contract for two more full seasons.
The former No. 2 overall pick has already guided Houston to two AFC South division titles and playoff appearances in each of his first three seasons as the team’s starting quarterback.
Stroud finished the 2025 regular season with 3,041 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, earning the No. 15 spot in PFN’s QB Impact Rankings. While his overall production has not completely declined, his most recent postseason performance left plenty to be desired.
However, for now, Stroud has remained focused on what he can control on the field while allowing his representatives to handle the ongoing contract negotiations.
