‘Need More Time’ – Jannik Sinner’s Message As US Open Withdrawal Sends Shockwaves Through Tennis Community

Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the 2026 US Open, sharing an unfortunate message about his knee injury.

Jannik Sinner has announced that he will not travel to New York for the 2026 US Open. The World No. 1 has been unable to regain full fitness after sustaining a knee injury while preparing for the North American hardcourt swing.

In a message shared on Friday, August 21, Sinner expressed his disappointment at being forced to miss the final Grand Slam of the season.

Jannik Sinner Withdraws From the 2026 US Open

Sinner has not competed since winning the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, where he successfully defended his title. In fact, following his unexpected collapse at the French Open in late May, the grass-court Major has been his only appearance on tour.

The 25-year-old opted against competing at the Montréal Masters 1000, given its proximity to Wimbledon. He had initially planned to resume his campaign in Cincinnati, but those plans were derailed after he reportedly injured his right knee during a pre-tournament training session in Monaco. As a result, Sinner was forced to withdraw from the US Open tune-up event.

He underwent an intensive rehabilitation program at J Medical in Turin in a bid to recover in time for the US Open. However, the World No. 1 ultimately remained unconvinced about his fitness and opted to extend his recovery period rather than risk an early return in New York.

“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year,” he wrote on social media.

“We have been back on court in Monte-Carlo over the last couple of days and have realized that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue. I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there,” he added.

Jannik Sinner’s withdrawal news comes just a day after Carlos Alcaraz announced that he was making his competitive comeback at the US Open. The Spaniard hasn’t been active on the tour ever since he injured his right wrist at the Barcelona Open in April.

While fans were hoping to witness a renewal of the “Sincaraz” rivalry at Flushing Meadows, they will have to wait a little longer. Sinner and Alcaraz have faced each other 17 times at tour level, but only once in 2026 so far. The Italian defeated Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters final earlier this year, which marked the Spaniard’s penultimate match before his prolonged injury layoff.
