Sophie Cunningham has generated plenty of buzz after publicly advocating for female-only categories in women’s sports and voicing strong opposition to the participation of trans athletes, emphasizing fair competition and locker room safety for women and young girls.
While the veteran guard’s comments have put the WNBA’s inclusion policies and rules in the spotlight, the narrative has been sensationalized by media outlets, igniting a broader ideological debate with the storyline.
JK Rowling Applauds Matt Calkins’ Resignation Over Censorship in Sophie Cunningham Trans Athlete Debate
Amid the trans-athlete debate, several writers and columnists have written opinion pieces to share their thoughts on the matter. Some have also seen their work shelved or canceled due to the politically controversial nature of the topic.
The Seattle Times’ sports columnist Matt Calkins also found himself in the middle of the storm after his piece, addressing the ongoing WNBA discourse surrounding the debate over transgender athletes was reportedly censored by editors. He claimed that this was not the first time his drafts were rejected, but this instance led him to decide it was time to leave.
The veteran reporter took to social media to announce his resignation from the newspaper after 11 years of partnership.
“After 11 years as a sports columnist at the Seattle Times, I have decided to resign. It was entirely my choice, and it was not an easy one,” wrote Calkins. “The impetus was the Times declining to run a column I wrote from the perspective of two female student athletes who were opposed to competing against biological males.”
“It was one of several pieces of mine that had been spiked, and I no longer felt like I could properly do my job as a columnist. I lay out the situation in greater detail in the link below, but I want to say that I enjoyed my time with the paper, find the talent there to be immense, and have no animosity toward anyone who works there. It was just time for a change.”
This caught the attention of J.K. Rowling, author of Harry Potter, who has been a prominent global figure in debates over biological sex and gender identity.
“Integrity,” tweeted Rowling, offering a one-word praise for Calkins’ choice to walk away.

Replying to the post, Calkins expressed his gratitude by writing, “Whoa. I appreciate it, J.K. And thanks for the Dumbledore quote!”
The fallout underscores the growing tension in the league, as journalists face increasing pressure to balance viral social issues with editorial boundaries and personal reporting choices.
The WNBA is currently experiencing its most politicized season, and Calkins’s exit marks a pivotal moment for traditional journalism as it continues to navigate cultural debates.
