A remarkable transformation from four wins in the 2024 season to a Super Bowl appearance in the following campaign should have strapped a rocket ship to the New England Patriots. But the offseason started off on an extremely sour note for the organization.
An alleged affair was exposed between head coach Mike Vrabel and veteran reporter Dianna Russini, drawing intense speculation from football fans at large. It was a story that could have cast a shadow over the entire season, if not for one specific move that the team made.
Mike Vrabel Found an Escape from the Dianna Russini Scandal
When pictures of Vrabel and Russini leaked from a resort in Arizona, the story instantly spread like wildfire. Speculation was rife on social media, as fans pieced together a ton of their history to build a relative timeline of their relationships.
Quotes from interviews, insider scoops, and even Spotify playlists weren’t spared, as internet sleuths went through their history with a fine-tooth comb. Even as most major media companies stayed silent about the situation, the scandal had become impossible to ignore.
It threatened to be a storyline throughout the year, as various teams referenced the affair during their respective schedule releases. Russini even had to step down from her role at The Athletic, while the reigning Coach of the Year entered counseling.

It might have continued to be the biggest story of the year surrounding the Patriots, but Mike Reiss of ESPN believes the narrative flipped when they acquired A.J. Brown. After the trade went through on June 1, 2026, Reiss believes the focus returned to the field.
“I believe when this whole thing started to blow up that; how could it not affect anyone that was involved in that?” Reiss said. “As much as you can compartmentalize things, that was a big thing that happened, and so I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t have affected Mike Vrabel.”

Reiss pointed to the months when the story first started gaining momentum, which even caused Vrabel to miss the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft. But he believes there has been a noticeable shift since Brown came into the building.
“Once they traded for AJ Brown, which was June 1st, the energy to me, just being a reporter around the team and being here as much as they let us be here, it felt like it shifted to me, and the attention to shifted more to football, to A.J., to what they were doing,” Reiss added.

It remains to be seen if it is a tangible enough change for the organization. But even if Vrabel and the Patriots have been able to bring their attention back to the field, other teams could still use the scandal against them.
From trash-talking to direct shots against the head coach, it could become a season full of verbal barbs that the players and the coaching staff have to prepare for.
