The Las Vegas Raiders have been an NFL franchise for 66 years, having been founded in 1960. During that time, they’ve moved cities multiple times, going from the Oakland Raiders to the Los Angeles Raiders, back to Oakland in 1995, and ultimately to Las Vegas in 2020.
In the six seasons since then, they have called Allegiant Stadium home, which opened on July 31 of the same year. But just six seasons in, the team is already looking to make major improvements, with a portion of the amount potentially coming from the state itself.
Raiders Want Improvements at Allegiant Stadium
Immediately becoming one of the premier stadiums in the NFL upon its inception, it features some incredibly modern amenities. As a result, it has already hosted a Super Bowl, with the overtime classic between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers in 2024 played under its bright lights.
And it is already scheduled to host another Super Bowl, Super Bowl 63, in 2029. But before that comes to fruition, the Raiders are looking to make some additions to the project’s current landscape.
“The Las Vegas Raiders are eyeing improvements to Allegiant Stadium, home of Super Bowl 63,” insider Adam Schefter revealed on X.
Explaining the specific additions that the organization is looking for, he elaborated: “On the agenda later today for the Las Vegas Stadium Authority: a $158 million improvement to the stadium’s North Entry, which will create a new ‘front door’ for the stadium, including a pedestrian deck, public plaza, event deck and other transportation improvements.”

Some of that blockbuster price tag will be borne by authorities, with Schefter adding, “The Raiders are seeking $75 million from LVSA, which would come from an existing taxpayer fund allocated to Allegiant Stadium-related improvements and will privately fund the remainder.”
About an even split, it still left the fan base pissed at the proceedings. One fan explained the absurdity of the demands, exclaiming, “Didn’t this stadium open less than 10 years ago? Full well knowing they’d be placing Super Bowl bids when they designed it? Smdh”

The $158 million cost was the biggest problem for most folks, with one fan pointing out, “Paying $158 million for a gorgeous new front door is like spending your life savings on a museum-grade mahogany frame for a picture of a dog taking a dump.”

The extremely quick requirements just six years after the stadium’s opening struck most people as odd. One fan shared his worry aloud, writing, “Improvements only after 6 seasons? Oh boy,” while another added, “Didn’t they just build this like 3 years ago?”

Most fans came to the same conclusion that the cost needed to come from the owner directly, with one fan directly calling out, “Yeah, this seems ridiculous. Brand new stadium needs 170 million upgrade? Owner should pay.”

One fan went to an extreme length, suggesting, “Utterly ridiculous. There needs to be a federal law banning public funds from being used on this stuff.”
Some went a deep route, showcasing the complete mishandling of the entire situation as a society altogether: “Billionaires asking taxpayers to fund new stadiums and now less than a decade later renovations paid for by taxpayers….meanwhile the avg person living paycheck to paycheck has to fund their own [expletive]….this whole thing is [expletive] backward.”
But given that the news came out on social media, fans were quick to turn to jokes at the Raiders’ expense. “The @Raiders should worry about their team first; it needs more help than that stadium.”

It remains to be seen whether the project improves in the coming months. Moreover, with a set deadline, it will need to get moving extremely quickly. But with the vocal outcry against a portion of the money being sourced from the LVSA, it will be interesting to see how things play out from a financial standpoint as well.
