Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has voiced her belief, suggesting that the WNBA could benefit from fresh leadership.
Amid uncertainty surrounding Commissioner Cathy Engelbert’s position, Cunningham emphasized that the rapidly evolving league requires a ‘bold’ leader.
Sophie Cunningham Calls for ‘Bold’ WNBA Leadership As League Faces Transgender Participation Controversy
Cunningham first sparked a national conversation following an ESPN interview in which she advocated against the inclusion of trans athletes in women’s sports.
The stance ignited a broader cultural debate, leading to high-profile stunts, such as former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White declaring for the WNBA draft. The players were trying to capitalize on eligibility loopholes in the league’s rules.
This prompted Engelbert to form a league task force consisting of team presidents and general managers. The high-level WNBA meeting, however, brought no definitive rulings on eligibility.
Now, with the debate continuing to hover over the sport, Cunningham has turned her focus directly toward the WNBA’s front office.
The 30-year-old acknowledged that holding a high-power executive role is challenging and credited Engelbert with her past contributions. However, she believes that new leadership might help the WNBA.
“You do have to have a person in power who is bold, who is confident, who wants the best for the players and not maybe for themselves all the time. So I do feel like, as a whole, that could be a position that’s maybe open at the end of the year, but that’s not my call,” Cunningham told USA Today.
Cunningham recognized the reality of her high-profile platform, noting that public statements can easily be weaponized or reinterpreted by critics.
“When you do have so many eyes on you … that people can use your words for the positive. People can weaponize your words. So that’s just how people are. That’s how human nature is. So, that’s not gonna make me dim my light any more,” Cunningham added.
Cunningham’s outspoken comments have divided the WNBA world into supporters and critics. Supporters applaud her as a fearless advocate willing to challenge corporate leadership. On the other hand, critics accuse her of fueling unnecessary division.
During a recent game against the Toronto Tempo at Scotiabank Arena, the tension was on full display. Demonstrators gathered outside with opposing flags and signs, while fans inside met her with a mixture of heavy boos and loud support throughout the night.
Cunningham took the hostile reception in stride, noting after the win that getting both cheers and boos is simply what sports are all about.
