ESPN officially announced that Pat McAfee will join “Monday Night Countdown” as a full-time analyst. The move gives McAfee an even larger role across the network’s biggest NFL programming ahead of the 2026 season, adding another familiar face to ESPN’s prime-time lineup.
However, the announcement quickly drew criticism from analysts and fans who were far from excited about seeing McAfee take another prominent role.
Pat McAfee’s New Venture on “Monday Night Countdown” Draws Outrage
NFL reporter Ari Meirov shared the news on X, and analyst Alex Brasky wasted little time taking a shot at the decision.
“The NFL to announce next that Pat McAfee will be performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show,” Brasky wrote on X.

Similarly, PFN’s Editor-in-Chief Ryan Gosling questioned why ESPN continues to place McAfee in so many high-profile positions.
“Ugh…. Enough with this guy already,” Gosling said. “Is there anything he isn’t a part of at this point? Respect the talent, but there have to be other people who can work in these roles…”

Meanwhile, fantasy football podcaster Michael Hauff also mocked the network’s continued reliance on its biggest personalities. He wrote, “ESPN will not stop until Pat McAfee and Jason Kelce take residency in our nightmares.”

Still, ESPN sees plenty of value in the new lineup. The addition permanently reshapes the two-hour “Monday Night Countdown” show, which will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
McAfee will work alongside host Scott Van Pelt and analyst Marcus Spears, while Jason Kelce and Jason McCourty join as fellow newcomers.
Moreover, ESPN wants the revamped program to create strong momentum before Super Bowl LXI on Feb. 14, 2027. That game carries extra weight for the network because ESPN will broadcast the Super Bowl for the first time in its history.

Yet fans clearly did not share the same excitement.

Another added, “They can’t be serious with this.”
The backlash continued as more fans questioned ESPN’s decision.
One viewer wrote, “I’ve never seen a company sacrifice so much for such mid.”

The frustration reached a simple conclusion for another fan, who wrote, “No one asked for this, my god,” while another pleaded, “Make it stop man….”
Beyond “Monday Night Countdown,” Pat McAfee’s latest role gives him an even bigger place in Disney’s sports media lineup.
However, the former Indianapolis Colts punter will not slow down his already packed schedule. He will continue hosting “The Pat McAfee Show” throughout the week while also joining college football’s “College GameDay” on Saturdays.
As a result, ESPN now has McAfee appearing across several major properties, making his growing presence difficult for viewers to miss.
