‘Wrong Messenger’ – WNBA World Calls Out ‘Irony’ of Caitlyn Jenner Picking Sides In Sophie Cunningham-Fueled Trans Athlete Debate

WNBA fans react to Caitlyn Jenner entering the transgender athlete debate, with some deeming it ironic amid Sophie Cunningham’s saga.

Caitlyn Jenner has taken the Sophie Cunningham-fueled transgender athlete debate in the WNBA in a direction nobody likely saw coming.

On Thursday, Jenner, who publicly came out as transgender in 2015, told Fox News that the issue is “simple,” arguing that “XX you’re in and XY you’re out.”

Jenner’s position immediately drew strong reactions from the WNBA world, with many focusing less on the substance of the argument and more on the unexpected messenger delivering it.

The debate began last month when Cunningham told ESPN that biological men should not compete against women in sports. The Indiana Fever guard’s comments quickly became one of the WNBA’s most divisive talking points, sparking protests and rallies on both sides of the issue.

Jenner, whose own transition has made the former Olympic champion one of the world’s most recognizable transgender figures, is an unexpected voice supporting Cunningham.

Previously known as Bruce Jenner, who won the men’s decathlon gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, told Fox News that there is “hypocrisy” surrounding the WNBA’s handling of transgender athletes.

“We have to protect women’s sports. … I want to protect women’s sports. … I don’t want that to be ruined by letting biological men come in and play in women’s sports,” Jenner adamantly said.

That stance created an obvious tension for many observers. Jenner is publicly transgender while simultaneously calling for trans athletes to be excluded from women’s professional basketball.

The 1976 Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year quickly became the subject of WNBA-related reactions.

“Wrong messenger. Conservatives shouldn’t platform mental illness, even when there’s agreement on an issue,” an X user wrote.

“With no sense of irony, at all,” another observer noted.

“Oh, well. Now that a man has said it,” another account stated.

“This person is the reason all this crap started!!! He needs to go away!!!” one user wrote.

Skip Bayless made sure the league heard Jenner’s message. “Caitlyn Jenner, as Bruce Jenner won gold in the Olympic decathlon. Caitlyn Jenner now says biological boys/men should NOT be allowed to compete against girls/women: ‘We have to protect women’s sports.’ Listening, WNBA?”

Jenner’s comments arrived as the WNBA’s eligibility language faces growing scrutiny. The league’s CBA says only players who are “women” are eligible, but it does not provide a detailed definition of that term or a specific transgender eligibility framework.

The WNBA held a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the issue after former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White declared their intentions to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft. The league did not announce a definitive change to its eligibility rules.

Jenner, however, believes the answer should be far less complicated. Her proposal essentially calls for biological sex to determine eligibility, arguing that players born male should not compete in the women’s league.

That leaves the WNBA with an increasingly complicated debate and an especially unusual chorus of voices. For a league still searching for clarity, Jenner’s intervention may have added more heat than light, proving once again that the transgender-athlete debate rarely stays in the lane anyone expects.
