‘Unsetteled QBs Pave The Way’ — Fantasy Football Analyst Targets the Packers D/ST in September, Even Without Micah Parsons

Micah Parsons is a game-wrecking force and gives this defense tremendous upside, but we won’t see him in September and that changes how this unit plays.

Micah Parsons is a game-wrecking force and gives this defense tremendous upside, but we won’t see him in September and that changes how this unit plays. That said, fantasy football managers target matchups more than singular greatness, and there is no denying that there is a runway for this D/ST to be one of the 10 best in the sport through the end of September.

Fantasy Football D/ST Streaming Option: Green Bay Packers

The pitch for rostering the Packers D/ST in September hinges on a phrase that sounds compelling in theory: unsettled quarterbacks pave the way. I understand the appeal, but I’m not buying it enough to prioritize this unit over other options late in drafts, especially with a significant piece of the puzzle sidelined to open the year. Here’s the early slate in question:

  • Week 1: at Minnesota Vikings
  • Week 2: at New York Jets
  • Week 3: vs. Atlanta Falcons

On the surface, there’s a case to be made. None of these three opponents enter the season with a settled, proven passing attack, and the theory goes that shaky quarterback play creates a runway for turnovers and disruptive defensive plays.

I think that logic glosses over the most important variable here: Micah Parsons is out for at least the month of September as he recovers from a torn ACL, and that changes the calculus on this defense more than an opponent’s quarterback situation does.

Without him, I don’t think this unit is anything more than ordinary, and the numbers before his injury already hint at some real concerns beyond just the pass-rush question.

Let’s give credit where it’s due: this defense allowed the 3rd-fewest yards per play on first down a season ago at 4.6, trailing only the top-tier units in Denver and Houston. That’s a genuinely strong number, and even without blitzing much, this group ranked 7th-best at generating pressure. The problem is figuring out how much of that pressure profile was Parsons-dependent, and losing him for the opening month is exactly the kind of variable that could erode both the pass-rush efficiency and the broader defensive identity that produced those numbers.

More concerning to me is the turnover total. This defense forced just 14 turnovers a season ago, with only three teams in the entire league generating fewer. That’s not a small-sample fluke to wave away: it’s a real red flag for a unit being pitched as a September sleeper built on forcing mistakes.

A bet on this defense, in my opinion, is really a bet on the Green Bay offense doing enough scoring and ball control to manufacture fantasy points indirectly. If Jordan Love comes out and lights up these early opponents, maybe there’s some incidental value here. But that’s a lot of ifs stacked on top of an already turnover-shy unit missing its best player. I wouldn’t target this group as much as I would settle on them if I were the last to pluck a D/ST.
