‘That’s Where I Lose Respect’ — Ex-NFL Player Calls Out Enes Kanter for Making a ‘Mockery’ of Trans Issue by Declaring for WNBA Draft

Enes Kanter’s WNBA Draft declaration sparks backlash as a former NFL player raises concern, questioning the intention.

The WNBA’s already heated debate over transgender athletes took an unexpected and shocking turn on Friday when former NBA lottery pick Enes Kanter Freedom declared his intent to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft.

Freedom acknowledged that his move would “stir up strong opinions,” while insisting that he was “not here to mock, make fun of, or disrespect any community or personal choices.”

Instead of quieting the conversation, the declaration added another layer to an issue that has increasingly moved beyond basketball. One former NFL player, in particular, had little patience for the way Freedom chose to make his point.

Emmanuel Acho Rips Kanter’s WNBA Draft Bid as a ‘Mockery’ of a Serious Issue

The controversy gained momentum in recent weeks after Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham detailed her stance on trans athletes participating in women’s sports. Her comments triggered criticism and support, turning a relatively narrow discussion into a much larger debate.

Several WNBA figures have since weighed in. Coaches Stephanie White and Cheryl Reeve have argued that exclusion is not the answer. Golden State Valkyries star Gabby Williams said she would welcome a transgender athlete as a teammate or opponent.

Freedom then stepped directly into that debate by declaring himself eligible for the 2027 WNBA Draft. He said he had met “every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA” and was “simply asking that the current rules be applied equally to everyone.”

That approach did not sit well with former Cleveland Browns linebacker Emmanuel Acho, who is now a sports analyst. Acho took particular issue with Kanter using a WNBA roster spot as the vehicle for making his argument.

“Enes or Enessa Kanter wants to actually address the issue, but he can’t make a mockery of an issue that’s serious to so many people. That’s where I lose respect for him. … If you don’t approach a conversation with respect, then there’s no way to find any sort of common ground. I simply don’t respect Enessa Kanter’s approach to this matter,” Acho said.

The WNBA’s eligibility language has become a central part of the debate. Article XIII, Section 1(a) of the league’s collective bargaining agreement states that “Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.”

The provision does not, however, provide a detailed definition of “women” in that section, raising questions about how the league would handle an unprecedented eligibility challenge.

The issue has also drawn comparisons to other women’s sports. Last week, a New York Yankees minority owner urged the WNBA to follow the Women’s Tennis Association, which last month implemented a new policy on transgender participation.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has yet to publicly announce a definitive policy change on the matter. According to ESPN on Saturday, Engelbert sent a memo to teams saying further discussions about the divisive issue would take place the following week.

Kanter’s declaration has therefore put a hypothetical question of eligibility in the spotlight before the WNBA has publicly addressed how it would handle such a case.

For now, the bigger question is no longer simply whether Freedom could play in the league. It is whether the WNBA will use the growing controversy to clearly explain what its rules mean, how they would be applied, and where the league stands.
