‘Seat That Looks Like It’s Being Kept Warm’ — Analyst Floats Travis Kelce As Heir to Coveted NFL Broadcast Spot

An analyst has made a strong case for Travis Kelce to succeed Kirk Herbstreit in a coveted NFL analyst role with Amazon Prime Video.

Travis Kelce has built a strong foundation for his post-NFL career through his growing media and entertainment portfolio.

His success has already sparked speculation that he could eventually inherit a coveted NFL broadcasting role.

Travis Kelce Getting Unexpected Push for Major NFL Broadcast Position

Retirement speculation surrounding Kelce intensified after the Kansas City Chiefs failed to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2014 last season.

However, Kelce ultimately signed a three-year, $54.7 million contract to return to Kansas City for his 14th NFL season (although it functions as a one-year deal and it was structured this way for cap gymnastics). Given his age and career stage, many expect the upcoming campaign to be his final season before he calls it quits on his legendary playing career.

However, even after committing to another season with the Chiefs, Kelce’s name continues to surface in early discussions about his potential future in sports media.

Andrew Marchand of The Athletic previously identified Kelce as a potential top target for television networks if he decides to pursue broadcasting, while also suggesting that his star power could allow him to command an eight-figure salary as a broadcaster.

Meanwhile, Matt Yoder of Awful Announcing recently discussed the soon-to-expire deals involving Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit and, in the process, made the case for Kelce as a potential successor to the highly coveted analyst position.

“As for who steps into the analyst spot, this is a seat that looks like it’s being kept warm for Travis Kelce,” Yoder wrote. “The Chiefs tight end already has a deal with Amazon with his New Heights podcast and the streamer could certainly satisfy his salary demands. The major question is who would step in and do play-by-play?”

Kelce has already taken significant steps toward establishing himself in the media world through the “New Heights” podcast, which he hosts alongside his brother, former Philadelphia Eagles star Jason Kelce.

Jason’s smooth transition from the NFL into ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” has also provided Travis with a firsthand example of a successful transition from football fame into an influential media career.

Meanwhile, in April, ESPN broadcaster and Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman appeared alongside Travis and Jason on their podcast. During the conversation, Aikman suggested that an opportunity at ESPN could potentially be waiting for Travis after his playing career ends, and Kelce openly expressed his interest in the possibility.

However, Yoder also suggested that veteran broadcaster Kevin Harlan could potentially emerge as Travis’ partner in the booth. The analyst then explained how his experience could be particularly valuable in helping Kelce navigate the challenges of his first season as an NFL analyst.

“Harlan deserves a lead gig, and it’s more likely CBS would give their blessing to allow him the Amazon opportunity if it meant stepping away from Sunday afternoons. His veteran presence could not only capably fill the shoes of Al Michaels, but also help guide Kelce through what would be his rookie season,” he wrote.

Kelce’s accomplishments away from the field have also demonstrated that his appeal extends well beyond his production as a football player.

Through “New Heights,” the star tight end has consistently showcased an entertaining personality and the kind of presence that could translate effectively to television.

Moreover, Kelce’s marriage to global pop superstar Taylor Swift has given him an extraordinary level of mainstream visibility that few NFL players possess. The fact that Kelce and Swift invited a ton of broadcasters to their wedding was viewed as a potential hint that Travis is planning to make the leap into sports media when he retires.

If he ultimately chooses to pursue a broadcasting career after retirement, it could position him as one of the most recognizable personalities in the sports broadcasting landscape.
