Justin Jefferson is coming off arguably the worst season of his six-year career, and for the first time in many years, he is not being considered the best wide receiver in the league. The reason isn’t a lack of effort or ability on Jefferson’s part, but it was the quarterback situation around him.
J.J. McCarthy struggled with consistency and injuries throughout a turbulent 2025 campaign, and the Vikings cycled through three starters as a result. Yet unlike other star receivers who have publicly forced their way into better situations, Jefferson has refused to throw his young quarterback under the bus.

Jefferson finished last season with 84 receptions for 1,048 yards and just two touchdowns while playing all 17 games. He was barely able to extend his streak of six consecutive 1,000-yard+ seasons to open his career, but his overall stats reflected how poor the Vikings’ quarterbacks were last season.
According to PFN’s WR Impact Metric, Jefferson posted a career-worst impact score of 75.0 last season and ranked 38th at his position.
In a recent interview, Jefferson gave a more detailed breakdown of just how challenging last season was while still protecting McCarthy.

When asked about the offense’s shortcomings last season with McCarthy, Jefferson said, “It’s difficult; it’s hard, but also knowing the circumstances, also knowing that I have a pretty much a rookie quarterback, listening to anything that goes on, anything that I say is gonna hit the media. It’s just all about staying in the building.”
“Obviously talking to him about the difficulty and the negativity that was going throughout the whole entire season,” he added. “Checking on him after the game, ‘Hey, look, you’re good, you’re straight. Don’t worry about this past game; lean more towards the future. Lean more towards this next weekend and getting better next week.'”
Jefferson concluded by saying, “Those talks that we had together, that’s something that didn’t need to be said in the media, didn’t need to be communicated through the entire world.”

What stood out most from Jefferson’s comments was his refusal to assign blame to McCarthy or any other quarterback on the team.

Another Vikings fan praised Jefferson and wrote, “We don’t deserve you,” indicating how well the star wideout has behaved despite the inconsistent quarterback play.
One Vikings fan asserted that the offense won’t be bad this year and that Jefferson will have a productive season. He wrote, “That won’t happen this year. Vikes are very lucky Jettas is who he is and not a diva WR.”

Sean Neutron reacted to the Vikings star’s comments and said, “Jefferson is the WR with the least diva-ness to him. That’s a leader.”

McCarthy started just 10 games last season as ankle and hand injuries disrupted his development. Carson Wentz filled in for five starts before a shoulder injury ended his season.
Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer was thrust into action for seven appearances, including two starts, but he completed just 47-of-71 passes for 4 interceptions and no touchdowns. The decision to move on from Sam Darnold, who went on to throw for 4,048 yards and 25 touchdowns while leading the Seahawks to the Super Bowl, only amplified the frustration.

Minnesota addressed the position this offseason by signing Kyler Murray on a one-year deal after the Arizona Cardinals released him, setting up a genuine competition with McCarthy in the training camp.
Based on how the offseason has played out, Murray is the favorite to win the starting job, and even if he doesn’t play at an All-Pro level, his experience and playmaking ability should give Jefferson more consistent opportunities downfield.
That alone could be enough to make the four-time Pro Bowler’s day-to-day experience considerably better than what he endured last season, with more chances to win following closely behind.
If things click with Murray, Jefferson could easily reclaim the title of the league’s best wide receiver from the likes of Ja’Marr Chase, Puka Nacua, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, all of whom passed him by in 2025.
