For much of their football lives, Shilo and Shedeur Sanders were rarely separated. The brothers played together in high school, followed their father, Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, to Jackson State, then transferred together to Colorado.
Even when they reached the NFL in 2025, it looked like the brothers would keep on building their careers side by side. That, alas, didn’t happen.
Shedeur Sanders Recalls the Play That Became Shilo’s Final NFL Moment
Today, Shedeur is fighting for the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback job. Shilo, meanwhile, has walked away from football and is focused on music, fashion and the like.
During ESPN’s “This is Football” interview on Wednesday, Shedeur was asked who was the most impressive teammate he has ever had. He took Shilo’s name, recalling the moment that brought his brother’s NFL career to an end.
“Think about how his career ended. He slaps somebody, and he never played again. If he gonna go out, he went out swinging, man,” he said.
The comment was light, but it showed how abruptly things changed for Shilo.
The brothers entered the league under very different circumstances. The Browns drafted Shedeur in the fifth round in 2025 after an unexpected slide. The expectation was that he’d be off the board in the first round, but Cleveland took a flier on him with the 144th overall pick. Shilo, meanwhile, wasn’t selected at all.

Teams had concerns about his injury history, including a broken forearm, along with questions about his age and athletic testing. After the draft, he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent, hoping to earn a roster spot during training camp.
However, during Tampa Bay’s final preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, Shilo got into a heated exchange with tight end Zach Davidson after the whistle. Frustrated after some intense shoving, Shilo threw a full-on punch directly at Davidson’s helmet, which led to an immediate ejection.
It turned out to be the final play of his NFL career. The Buccaneers released him the next day as they trimmed their roster before the regular season. Nevertheless, a few weeks later, the San Francisco 49ers brought him in for a workout while looking for help in the secondary. The tryout did not lead to a contract, and as the months passed, no other opportunities came.
In May 2026, Shilo said that he had stopped training for football altogether and had since moved in a different direction. He has been making music and modeling, among other things.
