Off-court controversy and on-court dominance are proving a profitable mix for media outlets and have become the defining narrative of the Indiana Fever’s season, as the team keeps setting new records.
In the latest round of viewership updates, the Fever’s weekend clash with the Minnesota Lynx pulled in massive numbers, reaffirming the franchise’s status as one of, if not the biggest, draws in the WNBA.
Caitlin Clark’s Fever Shatter Broadcast Records Amid Sophie Cunningham Controversy
Indiana’s 108-100 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday drew 2.5 million viewers, securing its spot as the second most-watched WNBA regular-season game in ESPN history.
The latest record coincides with rallies following Fever guard Sophie Cunningham’s controversial comments regarding trans athletes competing in women’s sports.
While Olivia Miles and the Lynx managed to get one over the surging Fever and snapped their five-game winning streak, Stephanie White’s team had another record to its name. Indiana has now featured in all three of the WNBA’s most-watched games on ESPN.

Reacting to Indiana’s evident status as one of the heavyweights spearheading the WNBA’s popularity, one user could not help but remark, “And Monica McNutt called A’ja Wilson the face of the league ðŸ˜ðŸ˜. Caitlin Clark is clearly the face of the league!!”
“Olivia Miles is the draw!” another account claimed.

“2.5M viewers for the Fever is wild. I panic over 50 homepage visits. Hope the league uses this momentum to build real infrastructure, not just hype,” one user suggested.
“Everyone loves Caitlin Clark. There’s one thing we can all agree on,” one WNBA observer commented.

“Duh. Yes, #CaitlinClark keeps allowing herself to do historic PR for #WNBA while they use her as the punching bag of girl abuse, fouls and sabotage of her game,” another Clark fan stated, expressing their frustration.
Through the chaos, Indiana’s young core continues to excel, as Clark won Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday for the second consecutive week.
She amassed 77 points over her last three games, trailing only A’ja Wilson and teammate Kelsey Mitchell in that span.
Clark also led the league with 27 total assists, averaging 9.0 per game during Week 10. Her court vision and defensive rebounding have elevated the Fever’s efficiency.
Clark dropped 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists against the Portland Fire on Friday, tying her with Sabrina Ionescu for the third-most triple-doubles in league history (4).
Indiana now faces an intense schedule for the remainder of August. White’s squad will host the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
The Aces boast the defensive tools to challenge Clark on the perimeter and disrupt her passing lanes and the Fever’s free-scoring rhythm.
