Alexandra Eala has etched her name into the history books by clinching her maiden tour-level title at the 2026 Mubadala DC Open, becoming the first player from the Philippines to lift a WTA Tour trophy.

Eala did not have an easy path to the DC Open title. She faced a tough challenge against Zheng Qinwen in the first round, displaying her resilience while securing a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 comeback win.
The 21-year-old then defeated No. 7 seed and defending champion Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 7-6(1) in the second round, before claiming a dominant 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 2 seed Elina Svitolina to book her spot in the semifinals.
Taking on No. 3 seed Naomi Osaka in the final four, Eala produced another commanding display to secure a 6-4, 6-2 victory and reach the final. She squared off against top seed Jessica Pegula in a dramatic, rain-hit title clash.
When the blockbuster showdown commenced on Sunday, August 2, Pegula appeared to be in control of the final, taking the opening set before rain halted play. After a lengthy delay, the match was ultimately postponed with the American leading 6-4, 1-2.
However, Eala produced a remarkable turnaround when play resumed on Monday. With Pegula leading 6-4, 4-3, the Filipina won nine games in a row to complete a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 comeback and clinch her first tour-level title at the WTA 500 event.
Eala was met with a wave of congratulatory messages from the tennis community after her impressive victory in Washington, D.C. Eva Lys, Iva Jovic, and Zeynep Sönmez were quick to cheer on their close friend with supportive reactions.

Venus Williams’ husband, Andrea Preti, who had cheered Eala on in person during her campaign at the DC Open, continued to show his support for the 21-year-old.

Serena Williams’ coach, Rennae Stubbs, and Coco Gauff’s former coach, Brad Gilbert, also commended Eala’s performance, taking notice of the determination and progress she displayed during her campaign at the WTA 500 event.

Alexandra Eala will have little time to savor her impressive DC Open triumph, as she must quickly head to Toronto for the Canadian Open after the postponed final delayed her travel. Following a first-round bye, the No. 25 seed will face Alycia Parks in her opening match at the WTA 1000 event.
