Caitlin Clark found herself facing questions that had little to do with basketball following the Indiana Fever’s 108-100 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday.
Asked about the transgender athlete controversy involving teammate Sophie Cunningham, the three-time All-Star declined to take a public position, saying there are more appropriate forums for that discussion.
Clark’s response prompted an Outkick writer to resurface an old quote from Clark about men competing against women.

Clark’s past comments about the difference between NBA and WNBA players have resurfaced, but this time, in a much different conversation.
An interview the Fever star gave in May is now drawing renewed attention after Outkick writer Jon Root cited it while discussing the ongoing debate over transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. Root argued that Clark’s own words could have answered one of the WNBA’s most polarizing questions.
During a chat with ESPN’s Malika Andrews, Clark was asked a hypothetical question about which NBA player she would most like to face in a one-on-one matchup. While she quickly picked Stephen Curry, she made it clear she had no illusions about the outcome.
“Well, I would get killed by every NBA player, but Steph Curry,” Clark said.
Clark embraced the hypothetical with her usual sense of humor, acknowledging that the NBA players would overwhelm her in a competitive setting. For her, the appeal was the opportunity to share the court with one of basketball’s greatest shooters, not any belief that she could win.
Root, however, viewed the quote through a different perspective.
“If you believe men are far superior than women in basketball, why can’t you say that men don’t belong in women’s sports?” Root wondered.

His comments came as the discussion surrounding transgender athletes continues to intensify across the WNBA.
Cunningham has become one of the league’s most outspoken players on the issue. Last month, the Fever guard reiterated that while everyone deserves respect, she believes women’s sports should remain reserved for biological females.
That stance has generated both criticism and support. Among those publicly backing Cunningham are U.S. Congressman Clay Fuller and women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines, both of whom have praised her for remaining firm despite the backlash.
However, not everyone within the Fever organization has taken the same position.
Coach Stephanie White recently said she is not “educated enough from a scientific standpoint” to make a definitive judgment on the issue. She added that she does not believe exclusion is the answer, noting that she competed against boys while growing up.
White’s comments drew criticism from some observers, including Root, who questioned why the coach refused to support one of her players.
Clark has similarly avoided taking a firm public stance. Instead, she has emphasized that the ongoing debate has not created division inside Indiana’s locker room.
For Root, however, that response was not enough. By revisiting Clark’s earlier remarks about the physical gap between NBA and WNBA players, he argued that her own words already acknowledged the competitive differences between male and female athletes.
