Connor McDavid has already given the Edmonton Oilers a clear championship window by signing a short-term extension, and that has done little to quiet speculation about what comes next. His decision to prioritize another run at the Stanley Cup by signing a discounted contract has left the door open to future discussions beyond 2028.
Even with that commitment in place, rival organizations continue to monitor the situation closely, prompting fresh comments from a former Stanley Cup champion.
Mike Rupp Discusses Rangers’ Interest in Connor McDavid
Stanley Cup champion Mike Rupp believes the New York Rangers have been positioning themselves for an opportunity to pursue a franchise-changing player, and McDavid remains firmly on that radar.
Speaking on Daily Faceoff, Rupp shared why he thinks New York’s front office has stayed patient instead of making reactionary moves.
According to Rupp, the Rangers entered recent roster-building cycles with a much larger objective than simply adding depth. He said management wanted to preserve the flexibility needed to pursue elite talent whenever the opportunity presented itself.
“I think we’re in a spot here where I think Chris Drury and management were looking towards this past summer,” Rupp said. “I think they were trying to position themselves in a way to go big, whatever that meant, the big, big-name players that were out there that we saw get absorbed by their current teams in a lot of situations.”
Although many of those stars ultimately remained with their teams, Rupp believes New York’s long-term thinking never changed.
“I also think that they have always had an eye on Connor McDavid and that situation and monitoring that,” Rupp continued. “So I think there’s probably a plan to do something big. It just hasn’t come to fruition up to this point.”
Less than a year has passed since McDavid committed to Edmonton by signing a two-year, $25 million extension with a $12.5 million cap hit through the 2027-28 season. Instead of maximizing his earnings, the Oilers captain chose a team-friendly deal designed to give the organization more room to build a championship-caliber roster around him.
The structure also delays unrestricted free agency until the summer of 2028, meaning any speculation about his long-term destination remains exactly that for now. McDavid has consistently maintained that winning a Stanley Cup in Edmonton remains his primary focus, and the organization has continued investing heavily in its core to support that goal.
The Oilers have already committed significant money to Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard, and Mattias Ekholm while also extending several younger contributors to preserve roster depth.
These moves reflect the same philosophy McDavid embraced by leaving cap space available instead of maximizing his own salary.
Rupp’s comments, therefore, speak more to the Rangers’ long-range planning than to any immediate possibility of acquiring McDavid.
New York has preserved cap flexibility and avoided sacrificing future assets in pursuit of short-term fixes, believing that patience could eventually create an opportunity for a transformational addition.
For now, however, McDavid remains the centerpiece of Edmonton’s championship ambitions.
While outside interest will continue as long as his future remains a topic across the league, his current contract ensures the Oilers remain firmly in control of the next chapter of his career.
