The hype for Marvin Harrison Jr. as he came into the league was through the roof. As a second-generation star, many believed that he would immediately take the NFL by storm, particularly after a strong showing at the collegiate level.
Unfortunately, through his first two years in the league, his production hasn’t been as good as anticipated. After some brutal tape coming out of training camp this year, though, a former Super Bowl champion believes he isn’t someone the Arizona Cardinals can rely upon.
Marvin Harrison Jr. Isn’t Giving Fans Confidence
The fourth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Harrison was drafted by the Cardinals as an ideal playmaker for Kyler Murray. However, in his two years with the franchise, he has been solid, if unspectacular.
Tallying 885 yards and eight touchdowns as a rookie, which ranked at number 41 on PFSN’s Wide Receiver Impact Metrics. Unfortunately, his numbers regressed last year to 608 yards and 4 touchdowns, reflecting his No. 42 ranking.
However, for those still holding out hope on the youngster, this season hasn’t gotten off to a splendid start. Throughout training camp, with Carson Beck, Gardner Minshew, and Jacoby Brissett handling quarterback responsibilities, the highlight tape has been filled with Harrison’s miscues.
As a result, Asante Samuel has soured on him as a prospect. The former cornerback shared his breakdown of the former Fred Biletnikoff award winner on the latest episode of the “Say What Needs To Be Said” podcast.
“Marvin Harrison Jr. isn’t showing any improvement, and he’s heading into his third season with the Arizona Cardinals. His best asset at this point is his size. He only has one speed, and his hands are not dependable. That sounds like a lot of negatives to be the fourth overall pick.”
Unfortunately, the problems were only getting more pronounced the more Samuel watched tape for Harrison. The latest from the Cardinals’ training camp, as they prepare to kick off the preseason slate with the Hall of Fame game, hasn’t helped matters.
“When I’m watching him run his routes, he’s just not fast. He doesn’t have the quickness to be effective from the line of scrimmage. When you watch Marvin Harrison Jr. run his routes, it looks lackadaisical,” which made it a problem for the quarterback as well.

“The quarterback is expecting Marvin Harrison to be at a certain pace when he comes in and out of his breaks. It’s just lacklustre. That’s what it looks like.” As a result, the four-time Pro Bowler saw one pathway that could allow Arizona to get the most out of him.
“I could see the Cardinals using Marvin Harrison in the slot and trying to send him over the middle and make those tough catches, but he has to have that will and desire. I’m not seeing too much of anything from Marvin Harrison right now. He looks like a player that expects things to work out, not someone that is willing to go out there and make sure that things work out in his favor.”
It remains to be seen if Harrison can turn things around for himself in the near future. The potential that made him such a highly-touted draft selection is still there. But unless he starts producing at a level that matches the pedigree, his career trajectory could shift dramatically in the near future.
