While trade rumors surrounding Leon Draisaitl occasionally generate headlines across hockey media, they remain rooted in external media speculation rather than internal friction within the Edmonton Oilers.
Even so, that hasn’t stopped insiders from wondering what the future might hold if the Oilers fail to hoist the Stanley Cup.
Original Six Team Linked to Leon Draisaitl
Any discussion about Draisaitl’s future has to begin with the reality of his contract situation.
The 30-year-old is entering the second season of the eight-year, $112 million extension he signed with Edmonton, carrying a cap hit of $14 million. Just as importantly, the deal includes a full no-movement clause, meaning the Oilers cannot trade him without his approval.
At the moment, there is no indication that Draisaitl is looking for a way out.
Still, New York Rangers insider Vincent Mercogliano recently explored several long-shot scenarios involving some of the league’s biggest names.
“Pie-in-the-sky scenarios could include the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews and the Edmonton Oilers’ Leon Draisaitl, with the former scheduled to join McDavid as a free agent in 2028 while the latter may decide he wants out if the Oilers’ situation doesn’t improve,” Mercogliano said.
While Mercogliano notes this is far from an immediate issue, the premise hinges on how Edmonton performs over the next two seasons. If the Oilers repeat last season’s early playoff exit, frustration could eventually lead to trade requests.
The speculation around Draisaitl’s long-term future cannot be separated from team captain Connor McDavid.
By opting for a short-term extension (2-year, $25,000,000 contract) rather than a maximum eight-year deal, McDavid effectively put the Oilers’ front office on notice. If the franchise fails to build a sustainable contender over the next two seasons, McDavid could re-evaluate his future.
Should McDavid choose to move on when his deal nears expiration, Draisaitl could exercise his NMC leverage to request a trade out of Edmonton, though the Rangers will have some work to do to position themselves among the leading contenders for his signature.
For now, however, the Oilers remain focused on chasing a championship.
General manager Stan Bowman has already made several significant changes, hiring Mike Babcock as head coach, acquiring goaltender Devon Levi from the Buffalo Sabres, signing veteran netminder Frederik Andersen, and creating additional salary cap flexibility by moving Darnell Nurse.
Edmonton also added Ryan Shea, Shakir Mukhamadullin, and Mathieu Joseph in an effort to strengthen the roster.
As things stand, a move involving Draisaitl remains little more than an intriguing hypothetical scenario. With a full no-movement clause, a revamped roster, and another opportunity to compete for a title, the German superstar appears firmly committed to bringing the Stanley Cup back to Edmonton.
