The Montreal Canadiens have entered a stage of their rebuild where adding the right veteran could be just as important as developing young stars. With an exciting core already taking shape, the front office has begun looking for players to further strengthen the team’s position.
The organization’s growing salary cap flexibility has only expanded those possibilities, especially with the upcoming free-agent class beginning to take form. This changing landscape has once again brought a familiar Bruins forward into Montreal’s orbit.
Pavel Zacha’s Future Keeps Montreal Canadiens’ 2C Search Alive
Pavel Zacha stands out as one of the most logical solutions to Montreal’s search for a dependable second-line center, even though his future in Boston remains unresolved.
The veteran forward is entering the final season of his four-year, $19 million contract, and with extension talks still developing, the Canadiens have another reason to monitor the situation closely.
If both sides continue to encounter differences, the Canadiens could pursue the forward in 2027 free agency.
Sportsnet insider Ryan Dixon believes Boston’s front office finds itself negotiating from a much different position after Zacha’s breakout campaign.
“From the team perspective, it’s a tricky time to negotiate a potential extension for Zacha because he blew past his previous career-best of 21 goals to pop 30 last year as part of a strong 65-point showing,” Dixon wrote, pointing to the dramatic increase in the forward’s value.
This production could make reaching an agreement considerably more expensive than the Bruins originally anticipated.
Since arriving from the New Jersey Devils, Zacha has steadily developed into one of Boston’s most reliable forwards, but an extension is the need of the hour for Zacha.

For Montreal, the appeal extends well beyond last season’s offensive numbers.
Zacha’s size, versatility, faceoff ability, and experience fit the profile of the top-six center general manager Kent Hughes has been searching for.
Dixon also believes Zacha’s market would remain strong even if he falls short of repeating his career-best numbers in the 2026-27 season. He wrote, “he’s still a big, versatile forward who is going to attract attention.”
He further noted, “The Bruins have been willing to at least listen on Zacha as part of trades in the past, so the idea of him moving on is by no means farfetched.”
Even so, the path forward remains difficult for the Canadiens.
Bruins general manager Don Sweeney has made it clear that extending Zacha remains Boston’s preferred outcome, so they will likely try to find a contract figure that satisfies Zacha’s camp.
Meanwhile, Montreal must stay patient while looking for internal options to meet its center needs.
If an extension never comes to fruition, the Canadiens would be in an excellent position to sign the forward. With roughly $39.5 million expected to be available ahead of the summer of 2027, Montreal has the financial flexibility to keep its eyes on Zacha.

As the league’s next free-agent class comes into focus, Zacha’s contract situation could provide the Canadiens with another realistic path toward solving their long-standing need for a second-line center.
