Brady Tkachuk’s exit marked one of the biggest organizational changes the Ottawa Senators have faced in years, forcing the franchise to reshape both its roster and long-term vision. While replacing a captain of his caliber is never straightforward, the organization has already shifted its focus toward building a deeper, more sustainable core.
This transition places added responsibility on the coaching staff to keep the locker room moving in the right direction. As expectations shift, head coach Travis Green has made it clear he understands exactly what the challenge demands.
Travis Green Addresses Senators’ Future After Brady Tkachuk Trade
Tkachuk’s trade to the Florida Panthers marked the end of an important era in Ottawa, but Green believes dwelling on the loss serves little purpose.
Speaking during an appearance on 100% Hockey, the Senators coach acknowledged the impact of losing his captain while stressing that adapting to change is simply part of life in the NHL.
“Yes, there’s always change. Much like when we have injuries, you move on,” Green said. “We’ve lost a good player, and we’ve gained a couple of good players, obviously, including a really good young player in [William] Eklund.”
Rather than focusing on who left the organization, Green emphasized the opportunity created for the players who remain.
The trade itself came after Tkachuk informed management that he did not intend to sign an extension beyond his current contract, which expires in 2028.
With their captain seeking a new chapter and hoping to reunite with his brother Matthew in Florida, Ottawa opted to maximize long-term value instead of risking the possibility of losing him for less in the future.
The Senators received a significant package centered on future draft capital, creating additional flexibility for the organization.
Moving Tkachuk’s $8.2 million cap hit also increased Ottawa’s available cap space, giving management room to pursue complementary forwards, strengthen its blueline, and prepare for future extensions for cornerstone players such as Jake Sanderson while continuing to build around Tim Stutzle.
Green believes the foundation inside the locker room gives Ottawa reason for optimism despite such a significant departure. “I have a lot of faith in our group. I still think we’re improving,” he said. “It’s going to be different with Brady not being there, obviously, but that’s part of the NHL. There’s change all the time. We move on, and we’ll be ready to go next year.”
The coach also pointed to the culture that remains intact within the organization. “I love where our progression is going with our group,” Green added. “They want to win badly. They want to win in Ottawa. They’re all in, and that’s important.”
Back in June, Tkachuk reflected warmly on his years in Ottawa after the trade was made official.
“I had so many great memories in Ottawa. It’s such a special place to me, and now this new chapter, just so much excitement there,” he said, while thanking the city, his teammates, and the organization for believing in him.

Although the captain has moved on, Green’s message suggests Ottawa is focused on ensuring the franchise’s next chapter begins with the same commitment to building a winning culture.
