The 2026 NFL offseason has been less about football and more about controversies like cheating allegations, player arrests, and car accidents. The latest incident involved San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who suffered serious injuries in a crash on July 14.
However, NFL insider Mike Florio believes those incidents share more than just bad timing.
He argued that the way the New England Patriots handled the Dianna Russini-Mike Vrabel controversy closely mirrors how the 49ers managed the news surrounding Shanahan’s crash.
Mike Florio Details Similarities Between Kyle Shanahan’s Accident and Russini-Vrabel Scandal
According to Florio, both organizations created avoidable public relations problems through delayed communication.
“The 2026 offseason has featured multiple P.R. failures by NFL teams,” Florio wrote in his recent report.
“The first was the handling of the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini situation by the Patriots. The latest happened when the 49ers failed to promptly disclose that coach Kyle Shanahan had been in a car accident, holding the information for 11 days.”
Florio feels the delay from the 49ers was unnecessary.
“There was no reason to delay acknowledging the fact that an accident had happened,” he added.
“He’s not a private citizen. He’s a public figure. He’s the head coach of one of the 32 NFL teams. Basic transparency is a must. Really, what was the point of hiding the fact that the accident happened? There was nothing to gain by hiding the fact that an accident happened. In the end, it simply created the impression that the 49ers possibly had something to hide.”
Right now, the 46-year-old head coach is on the path to recovery. He received 40 stitches to his face and reportedly suffered a concussion, fractured ribs, a broken nose, a broken hand, and nearly lost his right eye.
For whatever reason, the 49ers kept the incident until July 25, even though the incident happened 11 days earlier.
Florio believes the Patriots handled the Russini-Vrabel scandal the same way.
The controversy started when the two were pictured together at a resort in Arizona before the NFL’s annual league meetings. At first, both Vrabel and Russini denied that anything had taken place, but the story continued to attract widespread attention.
Soon afterward, the Patriots responded with an aggressive crisis communication plan. The organization publicly backed its head coach while initially trying to keep the story from ballooning into a whole thing.
But that approach failed, and Vrabel eventually issued a public apology for his actions, while Russini stepped down from her role at The Athletic.
A few days later, Vrabel briefly stepped away from his duties at the NFL Draft to attend family counseling before returning to work. Meanwhile, the Patriots and the NFL treated the matter as a personal issue rather than something tied to football operations.
Since then, many analysts and reporters have continued to criticize how the organization handled the controversy.
Coming back to Shanahan, the 49ers head coach is expected to participate in training camp on a limited basis while doctors continue to monitor his condition. His concussion symptoms remain the biggest hurdle before he receives full medical clearance.
