It’s another day, which means another WNBA controversy has broken out. No, it’s not Caitlin Clark or even Angel Reese.
This time, it involves a WNBA team’s co-owner, the Seattle Storm’s Celeste Keaton, and Sophie Cunningham, one of the internet’s latest subjects for meme fuel.
Celeste Keaton’s Punishment for Incident With Sophie Cunningham Fans Ignites Social Media
On Tuesday night, as the Storm were on their way to suffering a 105-95 loss to Cunningham’s Indiana Fever, Keaton reportedly verbally assaulted two teenage fans wearing XX-XY shirts. Keaton referred to the pair of teenage girls as “[expletive] insane.”
One of the girls’ signs read, “Thank you, Sophie for speaking up for girls!” The sign and shirts were a reference to Cunningham’s recent comments opposing transgender women competing in women’s sports.
The WNBA seemingly didn’t like Keaton’s behavior, as on Wednesday, she was “fined and suspended from attending any of the Storm’s next five home games.”

Some weren’t appreciative of the fact that Keaton got disciplined for her actions, but Cunningham didn’t face any punishment for her “bigotry.”

Another X user went as far as to say that the WNBA is the “most embarrassing sports league ever.”

For whatever reason, a lot of the drama surrounding the WNBA does seem to revolve around Fever players. One account claimed Indiana is “ruining this league.”

However, one X user was quick to take the opposing side, saying Keaton got what she deserved after exploding on the young girls.
“If you swear at teen girls, a suspension is the minimum you deserve. She needs to issue a public apology, and the Storm fan who spit on a fan, and the other fan who harassed girls should be banned from games,” the observer wrote.

Another user reminded everyone that “actions have consequences,” and now Keaton is facing hers.

Jennifer Sey, founder of XX-XY Athletics, celebrated the WNBA’s decision, saying, “Turns out you can’t curse and belittle girls who stand up for themselves anymore.”

This is one of those situations where there will be complaints on both sides. Yet, clearly the WNBA felt it was more appropriate to take action in this case rather than stay silent.
