Le Batard is known for tackling tough and controversial topics, especially those that involve sports media figures, so his listeners expected him to have a take on the Russini-Vrabel saga.
When he opted to stay silent, his fans called out the double standard. Le Batard recently theorized about LeBron James’ free agency and whether former Philadelphia 76ers minority owner Michael Rubin could be paying the superstar under the table via a Topps deal, but many of his listeners responded by calling out his silence on Russini.

Others were quick to come to the same conclusion.
“Didn’t wanna ask any questions about your pal, Russini, tho,” one fan noted.

After ESPN took nearly two weeks to report on San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan’s July car accident, Le Batard publicly questioned whether the network could report objectively on the NFL. In response to this, another user took a dig at him.
“We can no longer trust Dan to report fairly on people that he is friends/associated with. Cc: Dianna Russini, Pat Riley, and more,” they wrote.
Le Batard Opens Up About Why He Remained Silent
Before the entire outcry from social media, the veteran radio analyst was clear about his intentions. He revealed his reasons for not commenting on the situation.

“I think a lot of criticism of me in general is fair,” Le Batard said about the situation earlier this month.
“This allows me to actually go back for a second and talk about some of the Dianna Russini stuff. Because I know that this is something that people are now holding up whenever they think I’m sanctimonious or doing anything that they find an opening to criticize me on.”
However, Le Batard believed there was a problem with the terms they were using.
“They’re like, ‘You’re being a hypocrite here, you weren’t willing to talk about that.’ I wouldn’t say it’s hypocrisy, I would say it’s inconsistent if you want to call me that,” he added.
However, he was willing to admit that it was the consequence of his actions.
“It’s fair criticism to say, ‘Dan, you should talk about Russini.’ It’s a consequence of me saying, ‘No, I will not.’ Because everyone is telling me how wrong it is. You don’t need me adding to that pile of criticism to make my friend’s life a little bit worse,” he said. “You want to hold it against me for the rest of my life? Totally understandable. I make my decisions with my convictions, I live with them, there are consequences.”
Whether Le Batard eventually decides to address the situation further remains to be seen. For now, Vrabel is entering his second season as head coach of the Patriots, while Russini has stepped away from sports reporting entirely following her resignation from The Athletic.
