Few markets in hockey come with more pressure than Toronto. So when the Maple Leafs selected Gavin McKenna with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, it didn’t take long for questions to arise about whether the highly touted prospect would be able to handle the spotlight that comes with wearing the blue and white.
Connor McDavid, however, isn’t concerned.
Connor McDavid Confident in Gavin McKenna’s Mettle
Speaking at the Zach Hyman Celebrity Classic at Oakdale Golf and Country Club in Toronto on Monday, Edmonton’s captain shared his thoughts on the teenager’s future in Toronto.
McDavid admitted he hasn’t followed McKenna closely, but what he has seen has left him optimistic. “Seems like he’s a good kid,” McDavid said. “He’ll have his hands full in Toronto, but he seems like he’s prepared for it. He’ll have a good support system there too with, obviously, Auston (Matthews). He’ll have lots of support around him, so he should be fine.”
It’s a perspective that carries extra weight coming from McDavid.
As a Newmarket, Ontario native and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, he understands the pressure that follows elite prospects better than most. While he began his NHL career in Edmonton, McDavid grew up around the intense attention that surrounds hockey in the Greater Toronto Area.
Life in Toronto Is Different
McDavid’s comment that McKenna will have “his hands full” reflects the unique reality of playing for the Maple Leafs.
Every game, every scoring slump, and every decision is dissected by fans, media, and social media. Expectations are high from the moment a player arrives, especially for a first-overall pick expected to become a cornerstone of the franchise.
Fortunately for McKenna, he won’t be navigating that pressure alone.
Auston Matthews went through the same experience after being selected first overall by Toronto in 2016. After nearly a decade as the face of the franchise, Matthews knows exactly how to handle the pressure that comes with playing in hockey’s biggest market.
His presence should also make life easier for McKenna. Rather than being asked to carry the team from Day 1, the rookie can develop alongside an established superstar who already commands the toughest defensive matchups and the bulk of the attention.
Former Maple Leafs forward Zach Hyman echoed McDavid’s confidence. “There is no better person to guide him than Auston.”
McDavid’s endorsement wasn’t over-the-top hype; it was a practical nod of respect from one generational talent to another.
McKenna has a steep learning curve ahead, but with an established leadership core surrounding him, the stage is set for a memorable debut season in the blue and white.
