Influential analyst Ryan Clark’s unusual dismissal by ESPN during a segment of the “NFL Live” show last week has divided fans. Clark was among a host of high-profile names, including Cam Newton, David Lloyd, and Tom Pelissero, who were laid off by the network.
Analyst Slams Ryan Clark’s ESPN Comments
During the weekend, OutKick reporter Bobby Burack blasted Clark on X for his comments aimed at ESPN and detailed how the network can recoup some of the money owed to the analyst.
“Note on Ryan Clark: ESPN owes him a lot of money still. However, by dissing the company and posting IGs naming Burke Magnus, Disney will almost certainly have a legal claim to claw back that money in the form of disparagement. It’s why fired people never comment until their deal expires,” Burack wrote.
Clark had a 13-year NFL career with various teams, including a Super Bowl title with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He joined ESPN as an analyst after his retirement in 2015 and quickly became one of the most recognizable faces on television.
The former NFL safety was mainly a contributor on the popular “NFL Live” show, with occasional appearances on the “First Take,” “Get Up,” and “SportsCenter” sports segments. Clark won a Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Personality/Studio Analyst in 2023 for his insightful analysis.

According to ESPN chairperson James Pitaro, ESPN’s takeover of the NFL Network in January led to the mass layoffs last week.
During a segment on “The Pivot Podcast” last week, Clark revealed that influential analyst Stephen A. Smith had warned him about making several enemies within the network because of his incendiary views.
“I gotten some heads up,” Clark said. “I mean, a summer ago, Stephen A. Smith sat with me. (He) took me to lunch in Los Angeles, and he told me, he said, ‘You know, there’s a particular executive that doesn’t like you. It had gotten to me so many times, and so having that dinner or that lunch with Stephen A. was just confirmation of it. He’s like, ‘You need to go set a meeting.’
“But so many times when I heard about this particular person, it was, ‘He doesn’t like you, or he’s said this negatively,’ so I’d heard it a ton of times.”
Clark’s dismissal has ignited widespread debate among fans and analysts due to his willingness to delve into controversial topics. After the news broke, Smith revealed his displeasure at Clark’s firing.
