Toronto Sun columnist Steve Simmons strongly criticized the people around Marner after his agent Darren Ferris questioned how the Maple Leafs handled his client during a recent appearance on the PuckPedia Hockey Show.
Ferris argued that the organization failed to protect Marner from years of criticism and revisited long-standing frustrations over rookie contract negotiations, including the difference in bonus structures between Marner and Auston Matthews.
He also pointed to the intense public scrutiny Marner faced in Toronto, including online abuse and concerns over his personal safety. “He really bled for that team, and he was never protected by his organization in my opinion,” Ferris said.
Simmons rejected that version of events and argued the conversation has dragged on far longer than it should have.
In his Toronto Sun column, he wrote, “That Ferris went public on a podcast recently claiming the Leafs ‘didn’t protect Marner’ was more nonsense on a story that is being kept alive only by the paranoid people in Marner’s circle.”
Simmons added that Toronto gave Marner every opportunity to succeed, saying the organization “provided him with everything he needed” and even “spoiled their players.”
He finished by stating that the issue should already be over because Marner is now in Vegas and the Maple Leafs are operating under new management.
Simmons’ comments align with the wider media response across Canada. Other experts have also questioned why the subject continues to resurface after Marner’s departure, especially considering the success he has enjoyed since joining the Vegas Golden Knights.
Marner’s Success in Vegas Has Shifted the Focus Away From Toronto
While the public debate continues, Marner’s first season with Vegas has produced the kind of playoff run that many believed had eluded him in Toronto.
He recorded 80 points in 81 regular-season games before leading the 2026 postseason with 29 points in 22 games, helping the Golden Knights reach the Stanley Cup Final. His playoff performance also included the fastest hat trick in Stanley Cup Final history, while his 29 postseason points established a new franchise record for Vegas.
Marner has also acknowledged that the move away from Toronto eased the mental strain he experienced during the final years of his tenure with the Maple Leafs.
