Kirill Marchenko’s name is still circulating in trade conversations as speculation surrounding his future refuses to cool off. Montreal remains firmly in the mix for the Columbus Blue Jackets winger, but as the rumors gain momentum, questions have shifted from whether the Canadiens can land him to what they might have to surrender in return.
This debate took another turn after a trusted Canadiens insider stepped in to temper expectations surrounding one of the organization’s prized young prospects.
Marco D’Amico Shuts Down Michael Hage Trade Rumors
With trade chatter reaching another level, Canadiens insider Marco D’Amico addressed one of the biggest rumors tied to a potential Marchenko deal.
As speculation spread that elite prospect Michael Hage could headline Montreal’s offer, D’Amico pushed back on the idea, writing on X, “I wouldn’t get too excited over the prospect of landing Hage if Marchenko is, in fact, dealt to Montreal.”
His message offers an important reality check for Canadiens fans. Although multiple reports have suggested Montreal previously explored what some insiders described as a “borderline insane” trade package for Marchenko, D’Amico’s comments indicate the front office has little interest in moving one of its most valuable long-term assets.
Hage remains a central piece of the organization’s future, and that stance appears unchanged even as negotiations continue.
Marchenko’s value has climbed because he has consistently produced at a top-six level. After posting 74 points during the 2024-25 campaign, he followed that performance with 67 points in 76 games last season while carrying an affordable $3.85 million cap hit.
With restricted free agency and arbitration rights approaching, league observers believe his next contract could surpass $9 million per season.
Even if Hage is considered untouchable, Montreal still has the flexibility to assemble a compelling offer. The Canadiens possess multiple premium draft selections, an impressive collection of young defensemen, and several NHL-ready prospects capable of attracting Columbus without forcing Kent Hughes to sacrifice the organization’s premier center prospect.
A more realistic package could include a first-round pick, a young defenseman such as Arber Xhekaj or Jayden Struble, and an additional prospect. This approach would give Columbus meaningful long-term assets while allowing Montreal to preserve the foundation of its rebuilding plan.
The Canadiens also have the financial flexibility to make the numbers work, with $9,783,924 in cap space. Montreal can comfortably absorb Marchenko’s current cap hit before negotiating the significant raise he is expected to command after his current contract expires in 2027.
