DeAndre Hopkins is back in an NFL building this week, but not as a player.
Mike Vrabel confirmed in his Friday press conference that Hopkins has been spending time at New England Patriots training camp, working alongside the offensive coaching staff and the personnel department.

The two go way back from their Houston days, and Vrabel made it clear this wasn’t some random drop-in. “[He] has got coaching gear on and he is helping out the offensive coaches. And meeting with our personnel guys,” the Patriots head coach said.
The news spread fast on social media, and the reactions ranged from excitement to confusion to a little bit of existential dread.
Patriots beat reporter Taylor Kyles was among the first to break it down, writing that “Mike Vrabel says DeAndre Hopkins is here and will work with the wide receivers.”
When Brett Kollmann asked, “Like as a coach?” Kyles confirmed it, adding that Hopkins would help “on the offensive coaching and personnel side.” Kollmann didn’t hide his excitement, calling the development simply, “That’s so sick.”

ESPN’s Mike Reiss offered more context, reporting that Hopkins is “considering the possibility of a coaching career.” Patsfans columnist Derek Havens called the news “pretty cool.”
Meanwhile, Fantasy Life’s account took a different emotional route, posting “I’ve never felt older” after seeing a guy they grew up watching catch passes now standing on the other side of the ball.
Not everyone reacted with pure nostalgia. Some fans started connecting dots and asking bigger questions. One Texans fan account wondered aloud, “Does Nick Caserio & nem hate Hopkins or something??,” a nod to Hopkins’ messy exit from Houston a few years back under Caserio’s front office.

ESPN’s Field Yates theorized that this could be more than just a one-off visit, writing, “Coach D-Hop could be a thing in the future.”
It’s an idea that isn’t hard to imagine. Throughout his career, Hopkins has earned a reputation as one of the league’s smartest receivers, known for his precise route running and ability to read defenses.
On Saturday, Hopkins was also seen working with the Patriots’ wideouts in a contested catch drill.

The timing also makes sense. As ESPN’s Jamison Hensley noted, Hopkins is coming off a 2025 season with the Ravens in which he posted career lows of 22 receptions and 330 receiving yards.
The 34-year-old is nearing the end of his playing career, but he boasts an impressive résumé. Hopkins ranks 18th all-time in receiving yards with 13,295 yards on 1,006 receptions in 195 games.
As he looks ahead to life after football, coaching appears to be emerging as a legitimate next step. Judging by the reactions, most NFL fans would welcome him in that role.
