The Toronto Maple Leafs have turned the page on Mitch Marner, but the conversation around his departure refuses to fade.
Fresh comments from Marner’s camp have reignited old debates about his years in Toronto, pulling long-settled issues back into the spotlight. The latest remarks have shifted the focus back to Marner’s relationship with the organization, reviving questions that many thought were behind them.
These comments drew a sharp response from a former Maple Leafs enforcer who had little patience for revisiting the past.
Jay Rosehill Blasts Mitch Marner’s Camp for Reopening Old Maple Leafs Controversies
Former Maple Leafs forward Jay Rosehill delivered a scathing remark after Marner’s longtime agent, Darren Ferris, revisited several grievances from the winger’s tenure in Toronto during an appearance on The PuckPedia Hockey Show.
Ferris argued that the Maple Leafs mishandled Marner from the start of his NHL career, claiming the organization failed to include Schedule B performance bonuses in his entry-level contract, did not publicly support him through relentless criticism, and allowed him to become the face of the team’s playoff disappointments.
Rosehill saw the situation very differently.
Appearing alongside Nick Alberga on Leafs Morning Take, he questioned why Marner’s camp chose to revisit events that occurred more than a decade ago, especially after Marner had already moved on from Toronto.
“13 months ago, the guy left the Toronto Maple Leafs, and apparently the Leafs are still on his mind. Eleven years ago was his entry-level contract bonus structure that his agent is [expletive] about. Like, what was the purpose of doing this on a podcast, Ferris? I don’t understand.”
Ferris had described the rookie contract negotiations as the moment the relationship between Marner and the Maple Leafs began to unravel. He also maintained that Marner was never adequately protected by the organization despite facing intense media pressure, online abuse, and even the traumatic experience of being carjacked while living in Toronto.
Ferris further dismissed reports surrounding a proposed trade to the Carolina Hurricanes, saying it never advanced beyond discussions because Marner’s family had no interest in relocating.
These explanations did little to persuade Rosehill, who argued that revisiting old disputes would not reshape how fans viewed Marner’s tenure with the franchise. In his view, the podcast appearance only reopened wounds without offering anything new.
“Were you going to try to change people’s minds who are annoyed with Mitch in Toronto? Hold on, 11 years ago he didn’t get the bonuses in his ELC. I’ve had him wrong the whole time. I didn’t know this information. Like, what the hell did you think was going to happen?”
Rosehill also pushed back against Ferris’ criticism of the organization by pointing to Marner’s own contract history with the Maple Leafs. He noted that Marner maximized his earnings during negotiations and nearly missed training camp while seeking the deal he wanted, making complaints about his rookie contract difficult to understand.
“As if he didn’t take every dollar he possibly could get otherwise and almost missed training camp by holding out. It’s just ridiculous.”
He closed his remarks with his harshest assessment yet, arguing that Ferris’ public defense only reinforced the reputation Marner had already developed among a portion of the Maple Leafs fan base.
“My problem with Mitch has always been he’s soft. He’s [expletive]. He’s moody. And you can go if you want, like bye, you’re just annoying. And here’s his agent just perpetuating that stereotype, bringing up stuff from 11 years ago. I really didn’t understand what the purpose of that was.”
