Mitch Marner’s departure from the Toronto Maple Leafs was supposed to close one of the franchise’s most scrutinized chapters, but the conversation has found new life.
More than a year after the star winger left for the Vegas Golden Knights, criticism aimed at the Maple Leafs has resurfaced through the person who represented him during every major step of his career.
The comments picked at old wounds for fans in Toronto, turning an old debate into one of the NHL’s hottest talking points on Thursday.
Mitch Marner’s Agent Takes Another Shot at Maple Leafs
The latest controversy erupted after Marner’s longtime agent, Darren Ferris, appeared on The PuckPedia Hockey Show and revisited his client’s relationship with the Maple Leafs organization.
Ferris argued that Marner “was never protected by his organization,” insisting the former Toronto star routinely became the public face of the team’s playoff disappointments while also reviving frustrations dating back to his entry-level contract negotiations.
Ferris also challenged several narratives that followed Marner throughout his exit from Toronto. He firmly rejected claims that the winger had been planning a move to Las Vegas long before the blockbuster sign-and-trade, stating, “The rumors that he always wanted to go there are not true.”
He also dismissed speculation that Marner had been tampering or searching for a home in Las Vegas before the deal was completed, while praising the Golden Knights for how they welcomed both the player and his family.
Those comments just served to dig up long-buried debates.
NHL analyst Drew Livingstone was among the first to respond, writing, “It’s been a full year now. Get over it Darren. ‘He was never protected.’ How about the time they fired GM Kyle Dubas cuz he said he was going to trade him. Sounds pretty protected.”
Writer Chris McCluskey took an even stronger stance, criticizing Ferris for revisiting a situation that had largely been put to rest. In a lengthy reaction, McCluskey wrote, “I can’t believe how they keep making it worse… A good representative finds creative ways to pour cold water on this stuff… This guy’s just fanning the flames.”

He argued that the interview only reinforced long-standing perceptions of tension between Marner’s camp and the Maple Leafs instead of helping reshape them.
Other prominent voices echoed that frustration.
NHL analyst Jeff Veillette questioned why the discussion continues to resurface, posting, “How many more years do we gotta keep doing this.”
NHL analyst Justin Fisher added, “I always thought Mitch Marner and his camp had big ‘crybaby’ energy and this did absolutely nothing to change my mind!”
“Marner and his team are so [expletive] pathetic, man, I can’t believe they are still going. So petty, so childish… they are obsessed with putting Toronto down. He should be booed until the end of time,” remarked Matt LaBelle.
Rachel Kryshak also disputed Ferris’ argument, calling it “genuinely preposterous when the organization fired a GM for wanting to trade him (he was right to want that). That is a nonsensical viewpoint and should be taken as such.”
The renewed criticism arrives at an interesting time because both sides have taken dramatically different paths since the 2025 sign-and-trade.
Marner thrived with the Golden Knights, producing 80 points in 81 regular-season games before leading the NHL with 29 playoff points during Vegas’ run to the Stanley Cup Final. Toronto, meanwhile, endured a disappointing campaign before winning the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery and selecting Gavin McKenna with the No. 1 overall pick.
Even with both organizations focused on the future, Ferris’ latest comments have ensured that the story surrounding Marner’s Toronto tenure remains far from over, keeping one of hockey’s most polarizing player-team relationships firmly in the spotlight.
