On July 21, 2026, ESPN published an article of Sophie Cunningham, written by Hallie Grossman, titled “Love her or hate her, Sophie Cunningham won’t be ignored.’ The 29-year-old addressed public perceptions of her political views and clarified that her beliefs are “very much in the middle.”
“I’m very much in the middle [politically]. I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides. And that’s all I’ve ever said about my political beliefs. But people love to assume.”
But what created the controversy were her remarks regarding trans participation in women’s sports.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans,” Cunningham said. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
This quickly sent social media into a frenzy and ignited an intense wave of backlash. On Wednesday, before the Fever took on the Connecticut Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the veteran guard addressed the media and doubled down on her stance.
“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” stated Cunningham. “When it comes just to protecting young girls in sport and women in sport, I feel very strongly about that. That’s why you have Title IX. That’s why you have some of the greats in women’s sports.”
“If Title IX women’s sports weren’t protected, then you wouldn’t hear about any type of women in sports. I have never once said that I hated the trans community,” she added.
Amid the divided opinions, J.K. Rowling, the world’s richest author, has publicly offered her support for Cunningham with clapping emoticons.

The situation unfolds as the WNBA, particularly the Indiana Fever, navigates a highly politicized landscape. Recently, 11 Republican lawmakers sent a letter to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert demanding increased accountability and better protection for Fever superstar Caitlin Clark.
While the league’s new collective bargaining agreement clearly states that players must be women to play, it doesn’t explicitly ban trans athletes who identify as women. In 2022, the WNBPA also released a statement supporting trans inclusion.
