Ryan Clark, along with several other analysts, was let go by ESPN on Monday. TMZ later revealed behind-the-scenes details surrounding the controversial decision, but Clark strongly refuted the report.
Ryan Clark Refutes TMZ’s Report About ESPN’s Controversial Firing During ‘NFL Live’
Following Clark’s layoff from ESPN, TMZ published an article titled “Ryan Clark: How ESPN Exit Went Down Behind the Scenes,” but it was the alternate headline, “Ryan Clark Wasn’t Forced From Air During Commercial Break After ESPN Layoff,” that appeared to catch the analyst’s attention.
Within the article, TMZ provided more context: “Ryan was going to be notified on Tuesday that he was part of a mass layoff, but on Monday … the network was made aware that a report was about to drop about the former NFL player being laid off.”
“The report was going to be published while Ryan was filming “NFL Live” and a call had to be made … how should he find out? We’re told ESPN honchos decided to get ahead of the news and tell Ryan during a commercial break, rather than him see an alert on his phone.”
“Ryan did not come back on the air after being informed he was being let go … obviously, the news rattled him, and we’re told both Ryan and ESPN agreed it was better not to return.”
In response, Clark pushed back on the headline on X, “I wasn’t forced? ‘I ask, should I be done now?’ The answer was ‘yes’.”

Although Clark wasn’t physically removed from the set, as TMZ later noted, “It’s not like Ryan was then escorted off set … Ryan was appearing on the show via Zoom … and was not in the studio.” Still, it’s apparent he had no choice but to ultimately depart.

As per Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, “Ryan Clark’s firing from ESPN was influenced by his perceived poor verbal conduct, particularly toward colleague Peter Schrager.”
Clark is one of nearly 10 individuals laid off by ESPN this week, alongside Sunday Night Baseball commentator Karl Ravech, longtime sportscaster David Lloyd, NFL insider Tom Pelissero, and former NFL players-turned-analysts Cam Newton and Bart Scott.
Despite his firing, Clark remained largely optimistic about his future in sports media while also wishing the best for his former coworkers at ESPN.
“Sending prayers and love to all those laid off today by ESPN,” Clark wrote on X. “So many of you have poured your life into that company, & I know how you’re feeling right now. My hope is as this door closes another opens for you all. God bless!”
