‘You’re Betting On Talent Over Film’ – Fantasy Analyst Reveals Bold Brian Thomas Jr. Take

Could Brian Thomas Jr. be a cheat code in fantasy football this year? You bet, but the profile comes with plenty of risk that you need to be OK with.

Brian Thomas Jr.’s fantasy football stock was on the rise for the entirety of his rookie campaign. He looked unstoppable for extended stretches and had us buying him as a threat to be the face of the position sooner rather than later.

Last season, none of that was repeated. His usage patterns changed, and the offense actually leveled up despite hardly using a piece that once looked like a building block.

The talent is what you’re buying into this summer, not any underlying numbers from the disaster that was 2025.

Why Brian Thomas Jr.’s Discount Is Wider Than It Should Be

The concern is legitimate. Thomas played through ankle, shoulder, and wrist injuries for much of 2025, and as a result, he had just two games of clear WR1-level production across his first 16 weeks. His target share dropped from 24.4% as a rookie to 18.6%, his catch rate cratered from 67.4% to 52.7%, and his drop rate nearly doubled.

That all happened. We can’t ignore that.

He was pigeon-holed in a way that he wasn’t during his first year in the pros. His aDOT spiked, and with that came volatility. We can live with that, but when you pair it with a red zone target rate that plummeted from 28.6% to 9.4%, a player once thought as a fantasy difference maker very much becomes a liability.

And this is where Jason Katz’s quote comes in. You could spend the next five hours looking at his advanced profile, and you’re not going to be able to explain away what happened last season. Trust me, I’ve tried.

You’re betting on the raw ability that we saw on full display in his first season to not only reemerge, but to be catered to. We need BTJ to return to his form, and we need something close to his initial role to reemerge.

The Jaguars’ Crowded Room Is a Real Risk, Not a Fatal One

Parker Washington is the name drawing buzz in Jacksonville this summer, and deservedly so. He set career highs across the board in 2025, averaging 14.6 yards per catch, and led the Jaguars’ receiving corps in target share (27%) and PPR points per game during a late-season stretch when Thomas, Washington, and Jakobi Meyers were all healthy together. That’s a real threat to Thomas’s target ceiling, and it’s the strongest argument for staying away, even if his target diet is a bit different.

The always underrated Meyers is also a threat, as he simply clears expectations on an annual basis. I went over the bullish case for him in my Fantasy Football Targets piece, and if you want some nerdy data, I suggest taking a peek at some of those trends.

Thomas’ rookie season was more impressive than his second season was disastrous, and this remains an offense with real weapons and a quarterback in Trevor Lawrence who has publicly said he and Thomas have rebuilt their chemistry this offseason.

The discount matters here. At an ADP outside the top 30 receivers, you can build your roster around stable options in the first few rounds and still afford the variance Thomas brings. This is a bet with real downside, but the price makes that downside tolerable, and the ceiling is a receiver who was a top-10 fantasy asset just one year ago.

The talent is real. We saw it. Last season got goofy for a variety of reasons, and while I’m not excusing it, I do think the industry has overreacted a bit.
