“And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
“I’m very much in the middle,” Cunningham continued. “I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides. And that’s all I’ve ever said about my political beliefs. But people love to assume.”

“[Expletive] awful. Cannot imagine being an adult with a large platform and choosing to bully vulnerable children in this way. Truly disgusting and beyond disappointing,” X user Kylie Cheung wrote.
“What could be more poisonous and insidious than referring to the wish to protect young girls in a locker room or sporting field from the unwanted intrusion of boys and men as a “phobia”?” another user weighed in.

Meanwhile, the league has already faced backlash regarding its cultural footprint this week. The WNBA announced its All-Star Game charity beneficiaries, noting the funds will support groups dedicated to keeping girls in sports.
However, a report highlighted that one of the selected charities publicly states that its mission includes moving “beyond the binary of girl,” prompting a response from former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines.
