Today, around ESPN, many employees, those on and off camera, saw their employment with the broadcast giant come to an end. Posts and articles continue to fly far and fast regarding the recent releases. The only comparable event is Black Monday in the NFL, when many head coaches are fired at the end of the regular season.
One of the casualties of the process was NFL insider Tom Pelissero. The widely respected veteran finds himself out of a job. Yet, due to recent developments involving a large media arm, Pelissero could make what many would view as a seamless transition while still covering the league as a whole.
Tom Pelissero Out As ESPN/NFL Network Cuts Continue
In recent years, ESPN has begun to reorganize and shift its departments. While many will go unknown, Pelissero ranks among some of the most notable front-facing roles. He has worked for the NFL Network since 2017.
When ESPN purchased the NFL Network last year, speculation circulated about a merger of the sports properties, leading to layoffs and job eliminations. Names like Karl Ravech, Stephania Bell, Ryan Clark, and Cam Newton joined Pelissero on the way out. However, unlike the aforementioned four, Pelissero is an NFL insider, which should garner not only consideration but also possible job offers.
One of the biggest vacancies is at The Athletic. While the outlets employ a number of NFL beat reporters, none possess the reach, connections, and sources that Pelissero boasts. For the last couple of months, the NFL senior insider role has remained vacant after Dianna Russini resigned before her contract expired.

Russini faded from public view after a scandal involving New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel surfaced. Back in April, photos of Russini and Vrabel together at an Arizona resort were published by Page Six.
Initially, Russini claimed that she was staying at the resort with friends. However, no corroboration apparently exists. Moreover, older photos of the pair from 2020 surfaced, including one allegedly showing them kissing at a New York establishment.
Pelissero easily gives The Athletic a highly esteemed reporter with sources and a reputation league-wide at various levels. The Athletic came under criticism for how it initially handled the Russini-Vrabel scandal, initially siding with the reporter’s account. As a result, many questioned the company’s credibility.
On top of that, thanks to various NFL deals with multiple streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, Pelissero may not be out of work for long. Yet, The Athletic could provide the most expansive platform for his talents.
