This offseason started with Giannis Antetokounmpo’s blockbuster trade to the Miami Heat, but LeBron James’ decision to move on from the Los Angeles Lakers and become a free agent has continued to grab headlines.
With Miami remaining in conversations as the next landing spot for James, NBA champion Kendrick Perkins urged Antetokounmpo to lead the recruitment race.
Kendrick Perkins Claims Giannis Antetokounmpo Holds the Key to Miami Heat-LeBron James Chase
James is now the biggest headline of the NBA offseason, but the four-time champion is taking his time before deciding on his future. He asserted that his choice is about far more than basketball, and that his next destination should align with his personal happiness and, most importantly, his family.
According to ESPN insider Shams Charania, there is still no timeline for when James will make his announcement, following his conversation with agent Rich Paul.
Miami and the Cleveland Cavaliers are among the top three teams to remain in contention, and with the 41-year-old yet to announce his decision, Perkins suggested that Antetokounmpo should help the Heat recruit the veteran superstar.
“I heard that Miami is at the top of the list,” Perkins said. “ …If Miami wants some real motion, Giannis has already done his press conference; he has to pick up the damn phone. That’s what LeBron James wants.”

Three-time All-Star Gilbert Arenas also revealed during a Fanatics Fest appearance that he had spoken with Antetokounmpo and heard similar optimism from Miami’s side.
“I had a little conversation with Giannis; they’re thinking in Miami that they’re getting him,” Arenas said.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has also indicated that a reunion between James and the Heat looks more likely. James previously led Miami to back-to-back NBA championships in 2012 and 2013 before returning to the Cavaliers.
A second stint with the franchise would create huge excitement, especially after the Heat boosted their roster by acquiring Antetokounmpo earlier this offseason.
The Greek superstar has also welcomed the possibility of sharing the court with James.
‘If there was a scenario for that to happen, I’d be very, very excited,” Antetokounmpo told ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk of potentially joining forces with James. “He’s one of the best players to ever play this game, if not the best. [I’d] be able to learn so much from him. Obviously, brings such a championship experience to the team right from day one.”
In career head-to-head matchups, Antetokounmpo has averaged 24.5 points and 8.9 rebounds against James.
In comparison, the four-time champion has averaged 27.9 points and 7.4 rebounds against Antetokounmpo. With impressive individual production, a James-Antetokounmpo pairing may spell danger for the rest of the league.
