In a candid conversation, Novak Djokovic and LeBron James uncovered the sharp contrast between their respective sports. Djokovic’s honest admission about the challenge of venting his frustration on the court prompted the NBA legend to explain that basketball players have far more leeway to express their emotions during matches.
What Novak Djokovic and LeBron James Said About Cursing on the Court
Following his semifinal loss to Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic attended Fanatics Fest in New York, where he interacted with some of the biggest names in the sporting world, including Lionel Messi, Tom Brady, and Kevin Durant.
While there, the Serb also joined LeBron James for an appearance on “The Shop” and opened up about the emotional demands of competing in an individual sport and how that clashed with the traditionally reserved image of tennis.
“It’s an emotional roller coaster, honestly. You’re by yourself, so you’ve got to figure things out. If something is wrong, and then tennis is a very proper sport,” Djokovic said.
Djokovic pointed out that with microphones positioned all around the court, there was little room to vent without facing consequences. He spoke about often receiving fines and warnings for audible obscenities, jokingly lamenting that his tactic of limiting his profanity to Serbian wasn’t foolproof.
“Now you have microphones all over the place. You can’t put a swear word anywhere. At least I do it in Serbian, but now I mean the last 20 years, I’ve been around everyone all of a sudden understands my language, you know. So, I get warnings and fines and stuff, but you know, this is a way to get it out of the system. You can’t control sometimes you just need to get it out,” he added.
In contrast, James revealed that NBA players faced no such restrictions, with trash talk and curses accepted as part of the game.
“We can say whatever we want to say on the floor. It’s a lot of trash talking. It’s a lot of cursing. It’s a lot of like, you know, we don’t have those restrictions,” he said.
On the tennis front, Novak Djokovic will soon begin gearing up for the North American hardcourt swing. He is set to compete at the Canadian Open next, joining Jannik Sinner, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and other top stars at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal, which will get underway on August 2.
