The Jordon Hudson-Bill Belichick relationship has continued to be the subject of much discourse and roasts since they went public in December of 2024. However, in recent years, as the legendary head coach took a new role with North Carolina, they have also been the subject of scrutiny.
Reports about Hudson’s involvement in the program and Belichick’s media interviews have raised some eyebrows. One analyst went so far as to say that it has distracted from the program’s play on the field.

RJ Young, on the latest “Adapt & Respond” podcast, was perplexed by the program’s headlines. “At UNC, the headlines have not been about your football team. The headlines have been about your man not being great and his girlfriend sending FOIA requests to the athletic department.”
Going a step further, he added that the product was paling in comparison to the off-field developments. “In many respects, most of the entertaining stuff about UNC football almost exclusively has to do with Bill Belichick’s girlfriend and how she has inserted herself into the program.”
As a result, he believed it had taken away from some of the positives for the program, even in a dreadful 4-8 season. Listing them off one by one, he took note of Steve Belichick’s work on defense during that 4-8 season, along with the promise the incoming Bobby Petrino hire brings for 2026.

“We’re not talking about Bobby Petrino as the offensive coordinator,” Young added. “We’re not talking about Steve Belichick doing actually a pretty decent job last year and probably going to do a good job this year.”
But it also took a slice of the pie away from the detractors as well. Going into the 2026 season, there are a lot of question marks about the roster, particularly at the quarterback position. However, that hasn’t been able to take focus, according to Young.
“We’re not talking about the turnover at quarterback and how they’re not going to start anything like Gio Lopez this year, right? They’re probably going to end up with Billy Edwards, who wasn’t even that healthy to play for Wisconsin, and Wisconsin wasn’t any good last year. So much so that people were asking for their head coach to be fired.”

Ultimately, though, he believed the focus of the program had shifted. As a result, he wasn’t keeping high expectations from them this year either. While he wasn’t anticipating a step backward from the Tar Heels, he didn’t see a lot of upside either.
“I’m bringing all this up to say I want to know from you, who is a hardcore college football fan, what it is that you expect from Bill Belichick in year two, because I don’t expect them to be better than they were last year. To be clear, I don’t expect him to be worse.”
After the headline-grabbing news of his signing and the massive annual payday of $10 million a year, excluding incentives that could amount to an additional $3.5 million per year, he believed the reality was turning out to be far more disappointing than anticipated. “I don’t expect him to be 1-11, but you ain’t paying $10 million for 4-8.”
It remains to be seen if this year can fare much better for UNC. In 2025, after a 2-1 start, which included two dominant victories, things fell apart in a hurry as they lost four straight games. Eventually, they finished with a 4-8 record, missing the college football playoffs by a wide margin.
