Ravens GM Eric DeCosta Shares Update on 2-Time Pro Bowler’s Future After Career-Threatening Injury

After three consecutive seasons ranking in the top 10 in points allowed, the Baltimore Ravens’ defense suddenly drifted down to 19th last season. So, why did the defense drop off?

One reason may have been that they were missing their anchor in the middle, a two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle. Yet, there may be renewed reasons for Baltimore’s optimism heading into a new year under a new coach.

Ravens Get Positive Update on Pro Bowl DT’s Injury

Last year, starting defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike’s season ended after just two games when he suffered a serious neck injury that required surgery. His absence left a big hole in the Ravens’ defense.

The team hasn’t offered too many detailed updates on the 28-year-old’s condition, so when they do speak up, it attracts attention.

Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta recently appeared on 105.7 The Fan and offered some encouraging words, noting that Madubuike’s recovery is moving in a positive direction. Yet, he also exercised caution, noting the severity of the situation.

“I think everything looks to be pointed in the right direction, but you’re talking about a different type of injury, a different type of circumstance,” DeCosta said.

“I’m excited about where Nnamdi is, and I think we’ll have more information in the coming weeks. In the next two weeks, I think we’ll have a lot more information that we’ll be able to share with people.”

As noted, Madubuike is working his way back from a serious neck surgery, one that took place in April. These are the types of injuries one doesn’t mess around with in rushing a return to the gridiron.

While it’s not much of an update in terms of providing a recovery timeline, it’s an update nonetheless. Clearly, the team isn’t rushing Madubuike back before his body is ready.

The good news is that his injury recovery continues to progress in the right direction. Once healthy, the defensive tackle figures to play a central role in first-year head coach Jesse Minter’s scheme. But before the Ravens can even begin to think about his potential on-field impact in 2026, his body has to clear all the medical checks. So far, all signs are good on that front.

While the Ravens don’t know what to expect from Madubuike in the future, the last time he was healthy, the defensive tackle was a dominant presence. In 2024, the Pro Bowler recorded 6.5 sacks; the year prior, he posted a career-high 13. The Ravens would love to tap into that type of production again after finishing with just 30 sacks as a team in 2025.

It’s easy to see why the Ravens are excited about Madubuike’s upside; now it’s just a matter of helping him take the right steps on the road to recovery.
