‘There’s Another One We Have To Land’ – Pat Riley Drops Cryptic Message About LeBron James at Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Introduction

LeBron James is expected to make a decision soon, and Miami Heat legend Pat Riley says the team isn't done after adding Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Weeks after the NBA world learned about the blockbuster trade agreement sending Giannis Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee to the Miami Heat, the former MVP was finally announced to the public on Thursday.

Heat team president Pat Riley was front and center, chiming in when called upon. To the surprise of no one, it didn’t take long for LeBron James’ free agency to become the focus of the room’s attention. Riley wasn’t afraid to address the elephant in the room, bringing decades of insight to the conversation.

Pat Riley Hints That the Heat Aren’t Done After Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Heat are seemingly constantly chasing superstars. After years of trade rumors involving Miami, Riley finally reeled in another big fish in Antetokounmpo. Yet, if the nine-time All-NBA selection is the main course, then the 41-year-old James might be the fine wine that makes this pairing complete.

While Riley is proud of the team’s accomplishments in landing Antetokounmpo, the Heat’s team president suggests there’s more work to be done, referring to James.

“We landed the plane,” Riley said. “There’s another one we have to land.”

Staying on topic with James, Riley took time to make his own recruiting pitch. Except, the 81-year-old Riley instead flipped the script, explaining that the four-time MVP knows more than anyone just exactly what he’s seeking at this point in his career.

“As far as the 24 year veteran that is something that would happen organically,” Riley said. “I hope I’m not talking out of both sides of my mouth here but you never know that you’re ever going to win a title until you win one. But you’ll never win one if you don’t have the talent and the coaching to do it… [Erik Spoelstra] knows what he wants. He knows what he has to do.”

Riley speaks from experience here, having spent four seasons with the NBA’s all-time scoring leader from 2010 to 2014, during which they won two championships together. But Riley also clearly mentions that this would be Spoelstra’s challenge and that he doesn’t put pressure on the head coach.

Spoelstra has championship experience and is undoubtedly one of the greatest coaches we’ve ever seen. It would be fun to see how the Heat perform with a balanced roster led by Antetokounmpo and Adebayo. If the Heat manage to get James back, it will also be Spoelstra’s job to figure out how to take the team forward, as Riley points out.

This time around, Riley doesn’t need to be the most vocal in trying to get James to join the crew, because the 22-time All-Star already knows about the standards set by Riley and coach Erik Spoelstra in Miami.

Ultimately, it may not matter what an executive, coach, or player says to James about teaming up. At this stage in his career, James knows exactly what he’s looking for, and only he may recognize it when he sees it.
