‘What Exactly Is Going On In Detroit?’ — Hall of Famer Questions Red Wings’ Bizarre Timing in Steve Yzerman’s Exit

The Detroit Red Wings were already burdened with pressure after another frustrating chapter in their rebuild, but a sudden change at the top has pushed the franchise into even murkier territory.

Steve Yzerman’s departure as general manager has created fresh uncertainty about Detroit’s direction, especially with key roster decisions still hanging in the balance. Instead of bringing clarity, the timing has only fueled more questions across the NHL.

Chris Pronger Questions Timing Behind Steve Yzerman’s Red Wings Exit

Hockey Hall of Famer Chris Pronger wasn’t surprised that Detroit is facing criticism, but he openly wondered why such a major front-office shakeup happened after the most important parts of the offseason were already done with.

Reacting to the news on X, the iconic defenseman asked, “What is going on in Detroit? Steve Yzerman out! Where do the Red Wings go? And, by the way, what’s up with the timing?”

Pronger pointed out that the organization had “already gone through the draft, already gone through free agency,” while the Dylan Larkin situation was still unresolved, making the move even harder to understand.

Yzerman handled the draft, directed free agency, and shaped the roster for the upcoming season, yet a new executive will now be responsible for guiding a team built under someone else’s blueprint.

Pronger said, “Where is this team headed? Are they wiping away the last seven or eight years of the Yzerplan, as we call it? What exactly is going on in Detroit?”

At the same time, the franchise must navigate Larkin’s trade request while continuing its search for a new head of hockey operations.

Pronger also shifted the conversation beyond the front office and toward the roster itself. “What is the core? Who is the core? And do they even have a core?” he asked before mentioning Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond as talented young players.

However, Pronger questioned whether they are truly “top-tier, elite players that you build around,” adding, “I’m not sure yet. And that’s a problem this many years into this rebuild.”

Yzerman spent seven seasons trying to restore the Red Wings to glory through patient drafting and long-term development, but the team never reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs during his tenure.

While Seider and Raymond emerged as foundational pieces, the organization struggled to surround them with enough proven talent to take the next step.

The Larkin situation further deepens the uncertainty.

Reports indicate the relationship between the captain and Yzerman deteriorated after years of slow progress, with Detroit refusing to guarantee a trade despite Larkin’s request. This issue now lands squarely on the desk of whoever takes over hockey operations.

Pronger wrapped up by admitting the biggest answers have yet to come. “Why the timing? Why did this happen now? What happened to get to this point?” he asked, adding that the league would learn more “over the next minutes, hours, days, and weeks.”

Until these answers arrive, Detroit’s front office will draw even more attention than what we saw after Larkin’s trade request.
