‘First I Was Like ‘Huh?’’ — AEW Superstar Adam Copeland Admits He’s Come Around to Maple Leafs GM After $65M Free Agency

Adam Copeland has followed the Toronto Maple Leafs closely enough to know that major organizational changes rarely receive unanimous support. In 2026, the franchise entered a new era after a disappointing campaign forced sweeping changes throughout hockey operations, leaving fans divided over the team’s new leadership.

After watching a flurry of moves unfold in free agency, Copeland admitted his opinion of the Maple Leafs’ new general manager has changed considerably.

Adam Copeland Explains How Maple Leafs GM John Chayka Won Him Over

Appearing on the Leafs Morning Take podcast, the AEW superstar reflected on his initial reaction to John Chayka’s surprise hiring before explaining why he now believes the Maple Leafs are heading in the right direction.

When co-host Jay Rosehill pointed out that Chayka’s appointment caught fans and analysts off guard, Copeland acknowledged he shared the same feeling.

“So at first I was like, ‘Huh?’ Just because it was out of left field, right?” Copeland said.

Rather than criticizing the hire immediately, he preferred to let the new executive prove himself. “But I don’t care. If it’s someone who thinks they can make these changes and is smart enough to have a presentation that they’re going to make a lot of these changes, okay. Let’s go. Let’s see.”

Copeland also pushed back against the early criticism directed toward Chayka, adding, “I’m not one of those people who’s going to knee-jerk and say, ‘Oh, he’s horrible. He’s lousy. He owns Wendy’s.’ Okay, so what?”

He continued by saying that many of the concerns surrounding ownership and Chayka’s previous experience deserved context instead of immediate judgment.

According to Copeland, it didn’t take long for the conversation around the organization to change. “My whole thing is, give the guy a chance. Let’s see what he can do,” he said before adding, “Within about a week, it seemed like everybody had to chew on some humble pie because the guy’s making changes and the guy’s doing stuff.”

These comments came after Chayka oversaw one of the NHL’s busiest roster-building stretches, committing more than $65 million through free-agent signings and contract extensions.

The centerpiece of that approach was bringing in Sergei Bobrovsky on a three-year, $21 million contract to stabilize Toronto’s goaltending, while Colton Sissons, Jack Roslovic, Brandon Duhaime, Teddy Blueger, Emil Andrae, and several other additions strengthened the club throughout the lineup.

Separately, they executed a sign-and-trade for former Tampa Bay Lightning star Darren Raddysh, the blueliner who was #2 on everyone’s free agency boards, by giving him an eight-year, $68 million deal.

The front office makeover extended well beyond player acquisitions. Chayka replaced former general manager Brad Treliving after Toronto missed the playoffs, partnered with franchise icon Mats Sundin in the executive group, hired Jim Hiller as head coach, and added Daniel Alfredsson as associate coach.

He also reshaped the hockey operations department by bringing in new voices, including Judd Brackett.

Copeland believes those decisions speak louder than the reaction surrounding Chayka’s arrival. “I think a lot of the moves he’s made are great,” he said, making it clear that early skepticism has given way to optimism as Toronto continues reshaping its roster and front office under new leadership.
